“Thanks, Travis,” I said sarcastically.

“What? It’s the truth. I thought that would make you happy.”

“I’ve barely worked for you for a week. I would hope you didn’t regret hiring me.”

“I don’t. Plus, the perks are amazing.”

“Really? That’s all this is to you?”

He held his hands up. “I was joking. Poppy, please don’t let her shoot me.”

“Don’t worry,” she said, laughing. “We’re not in a ‘stand your ground’ state.”

Travis started laughing then. “You’re funny,” he said. “You and Molly are both really funny. You should go up and do improv or stand-up comedy.”

“I don’t think so.” Poppy shook her head. “I’m not that funny in front of large groups of people, and I don’t want to get tomatoes in my face.”

“Me either,” I said, but I thought it would be fun, kind of. Not really, but kind of. “Why don’t you do stand-up comedy, Travis?”

“But what would I joke about?”

“I don’t know, Mr. Little Travis?”

“Mr. Little Travis?” He raised an eyebrow. “Don’t you mean Mr. Big Travis?” He winked at me, and my face went red.

Poppy groaned. “Guys, I don’t want to have to say get a room, but please get a room.”

“We’ve already got a room,” Travis pointed out, laughing.

“Oh yeah,” Poppy said, nodding. “I guess that’s romantic.”

“It’s not romantic. We’re on a business trip,” I reiterated, and Poppy laughed.

“Okay, girl. Sure thing. Whatever you say. So Travis?”

“Yeah, Poppy?” He smiled at her indulgently.

I could tell he was in love with my best friend already, and I understood why. She was fun, she had a great personality, and she knew how to keep the conversation going.

“Who are your favorite authors?”

“Oh wow,” he said. “I feel like I’m on a first date.”

“You kind of are with the best friend.” She grinned, and I glared at her.

“Let’s see. I really like Steinbeck.”

“Oh, of course, he’s a classic.” She laughed. “But everyone who took any sort of English class in high school or college read Steinbeck.”

“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean they liked him,” Travis said, and Poppy laughed.

“True, true. Who else?”

“Let’s see. I like Franzen.”

“Okay.”

“I’m really into Raymond Chandler.”
