She sighed. “I just haven’t met any quality guys, and maybe I was hoping to meet the right one. And maybe now I figure I need to live my life instead of waiting for Mr. Right, who might not exist.”

I looked at her for a couple of seconds and nodded. She was correct about that. Poppy had always had an idealized version of love. She believed in one true love, one true soul mate, a Mr. Perfect. And she’d always thought Sam had been him until he cheated on her, and then she realized that he wasn’t her soul mate, and she’d just been waiting for the right guy to come along. But there was no Mr. Perfect in life. There really wasn’t.Every guy had a flaw. Most had more flaws than you’d like to admit, but you put up with them because usually, they had perks that came along with their flaws. You just had to make a list of the flaws you could live with and accept.

“Are you sure you can have sex without it being in a relationship?” I stared at her for a couple of seconds.

“I’m as sure as you are,” she said, looking me up and down.

“And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means, Molly,” she said my name slowly, “that we both believed in soul mates and one true love, and we both wanted to meet Mr. Perfect. And you wanted to have seven kids and live on a farm somewhere and raise cows, and goats, and sheep, and have horses, and ponies, and kids in ribbons and pinafore dresses running around.”

“Yeah and?”

“And so you’ve gone from wanting that to being this slick city girl who could fuck her boss and doesn’t care when the relationship ends?”

I stared at her for a couple of seconds, biting down on my lower lip. “Okay, look, obviously, I want the dream. I want to live on a farm upstate somewhere and have my doting husband and my gorgeous kids. But sometimes we don’t get what we want in life, and sometimes the dream changes. Look, I like Travis. He’s funny, he’s cute, he’s intellectual. The sex is amazing, but he’s also really cocky and arrogant, and he’s not looking for anything serious. We kind of messed up with this pill thing, and whatever happens, we’ll have to make an informed decision together. I’m not going to lie, I do think he’s cute. Maybe more cute than I should for someone who’s just a casual relationship. But right now, I don’t feel like I’m going to get hurt if things end. But I don’t want that for you, Poppy. You’ve wanted this perfect life for so long, and I don’t know what will happen if you meet some rich billionaire who sweeps you off your feet and you havea wonderful arrangement for a couple of weeks or a couple of months, and then he breaks your heart. I don’t want you to be left traumatized.”

“I won’t be left traumatized,” she said.

“I don’t know. Look how long it took you to get over Sam.”

“Because I thought he was my true love because…”

“Exactly and what’s to say you won’t think this next guy isn’t?”

“Girl, it’s okay,” she said. “I know you’re trying to protect me, and I love you for it, but I’m not getting any younger. I want to meet someone, and I want to have fun. And hey, if the next guy I sleep with isn’t the one, then whatever. I’m a woman and why can’t I have a sexual adventure as well?”

“Because sexual adventures come with feelings.”

“So you’re saying your sexual adventure with Travis has come with feelings?”

I stared at her for a couple of seconds and nodded slightly. “I mean, I’m not in love with him or anything,” I said quickly, “but I do like him. I think he’s, I don’t know, just special. Don’t you dare tell him I said that.”

She looked at me, concern in her eyes. “You’re really falling for him, aren’t you?”

“No,” I said quickly. “It’s just…”

“It’s okay, Molly. I get it,” she says softly. “I’m here for you.”

Chapter 28

I knockedon Travis’s bedroom door and waited for him to respond. I’d been quite happy when he’d said he didn’t mind Poppy and I sharing a room in Los Angeles, and I was glad that I’d asked him before he found out about the pregnancy scare or I would’ve wondered if it was because of that. I didn’t hear any noise from the other side, so I knocked again.

“Just a second,” he said.

And then he opened the door. He looked me over with a wide smile.

“Hey, good morning, Mr. Covington. Reporting for duty,” I said, saluting him, and he chuckled as he opened the door wider.

“Come on in. I was just having some coffee with Dominic.”

“Dominic?” I said, raising an eyebrow, wondering if there were women named Dominic.

“Yeah, he is one of my business associates,” he said, nodding to the other side of the room.

I smiled when I saw a tall man with dark hair and liquid brown eyes, smiling at me politely.

“Good morning,” he said.
