Ruby gives me another look, and it hits me. Hits me right in the gut.

Sniffing the air I move to Samantha, confirming it. She’s changed today. Or part of her did.

Moving closer, I gently sit down. “Is there something you want to tell me, Sammy?”

“Daddy.” She drops her book and snuggles close to me. “My hand. It was a hand, and then it was...like a paw, a wolf paw. And I didn’t know what to do. And Mommy said you would know. I don’t...Daddy, am I all wrong?”

“No,” I tell her seriously. “There’s nothing wrong with you. I’m right here, Sammy, and I always will be. You don’t have to be afraid. I’m going to teach you how to handle this. I’m here. Right here.”

She squeezes tightly onto me. I kiss her forehead, hugging her close, looking over at Ruby.

We’ll handle this together, I tell her silently, communicating as only married people can.

She stiffens her lip and sets her jaw, my gorgeous, brave wife.

I know we will.

Samantha is a quick learner.

My daughter wolf walks up behind me, nuzzling my fur and whining, clawing at me, trying to get me to play. I let out a rumbling laughing noise, turning to her, baring my teeth, and moving toward her.

Typical Sammy, that sets her to yapping, gnawing at my thick fur.

Ever since she stopped being afraid of the change, she loves it so much that now, three weeks later, she’s able to wrestle with me in our large backyard as Ruby cooks up a feast in the kitchen.

Samantha yaps and chases me. I bark out a laugh, turning and running right to the end.

She yaps and leaps at me, her forepaws outstretched, trying to get me.

I roll over and let her win as she clumsily clambers on top of me and tries to place her baby teeth around my neck.

I leap up, making a howling noise, causing her to yap and leap back.

She stares at me, eyes bright, her scent full of love.

I stare back, my whole soul burning with the same, knowing nothing could ever shatter the life Ruby and I built.

“Hey, you crazy wolves,” Ruby calls from the house. “Dinner’s almost ready!”

Samantha turns, running toward the house, her yapping letting me know she wants it to be a race.

With a wolfish grin, I bound after her.
