“If you say so.”

I turn and she says quickly, “Oh and Robert…”

“Yes.” I sigh inside and prepare myself for another verbal battering.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“The lift the other day, the meal and, well, the company.”

I hold my breath as her lashes dust her cheeks and she blushes a little before a soft smile transforms her face into something breath-taking. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, Jessica.”

The door closes, but it’s some time before I turn away because for the first time in my life, I felt something shift inside me where other people have a heart.

CHAPTER13

JESSICA

Itake it all back with interest.

As I stare around a room dripping with luxury, I can now understand the attraction. Who wouldn’t want this?

It’s magnificent and, to be honest, so is the man who brought me here. I have tried so hard to ignore my growing attraction to him, but for some reason my usual cool detachment is deserting me this time. Money, power and movie star looks are a heady combination, and I am reeling under the pressure.

My room is ten-star luxury. It suits me and my tastes perfectly. There are no fancy frills, just a cool, modern space designed for decadence. The bed is bigger than my entire bedroom at home and the sheets appear to be the finest Egyptian cotton. The scatter cushions alone appear to be spun with silk thread, and the huge, padded headboard is a designer touch I definitely approve of. The soft white carpet is both impractical yet decadent and I quickly remove my shoes to preserve its cleanliness. As my toes scrunch into the soft pile, a wave of happiness washes over me.

This place is amazing, and I haven’t even begun to explore it properly. As soon as we pulled up in front of the mansion, I knew I was going to love it. It’s like a white doll’s house and even thought I hate and detest Christmas with a passion, even I imagined a big floral wreath on the front door, with potted Christmas trees, decorated with fairy lights on either side of the portico. In fact, this house was made for Christmas and yet you wouldn’t know it was the Christmas season at all. Although it’s clean and welcoming, it’s also sterile and stark and it makes me wonder about the man who owns it.

Why is this man single? It just doesn’t make sense because on paper, he has everything most women are looking for. There must be something seriously freaky about him, and I can’t wait to discover it and throw it in his face.

As I wander deeper into the room, I can’t resist touching the heavy silk curtains and running my fingers over the gleaming mirrored surfaces. I catch a glimpse of a remote control on one of them that appears to be labelled with different things to what I’m used to.

I press the one marked ‘lights’ and the room is cast in a warm glow that appears to be coming from the walls. I press the music on and soft classical tunes wafts through hidden speakers, bringing life to the room.

Now I’ve started, I can’t stop and as I work through the controls, I can’t believe my eyes. Curtains part revealing a floor to ceiling window and I’m guessing the view outside is as perfect as the rest of the house. All I can make out is the trees that are lit up by soft lighting, and now I understand why the other half live this way. It’s addictive, enthralling and desirable and I am sinking fast into the madness that goes with it.

I head through a door that leads into another small room that is decked out with floor to ceiling cupboards and shelves. They all stand empty, but I can only imagine the amazing dresses and designer shoes and handbags that could crowd the space if a person actually called this room home.

However, nothing compares to the bathroom and if the remote revealed amazing things in the bedroom, it has nothing on what’s in here. At the press of a button, the bath starts to fill and the steam from the water is even scented with lavender. Once again, the lighting is warm and subdued, but on further investigation I can change it to my preferred colour choice. A television sparks into life on the wall by the huge bathtub and once again there is a music option. As I press another button, the wall slides back and there is storage to die for. White fluffy towels, luxurious bathrobes and every designer potion and cream that graces a perfumery floor.

Part of me should hate this and be disgusted by the sheer waste of money, but the woman in me is clapping her hands with delight and willing me to behave myself so she can drown in designer decadence.

It’s all too much and I spend the next hour relaxing in the bubble spa bath, watching the news and indulging in my newfound luxury. When I drag myself out, it’s to wrap a warm fluffy towel around my body and liberally smear my skin with the lotions that smell like a dream.

If this is a dream, then leave me to sleep because I haven’t had so much fun in years.

By the time I’ve wasted two hours wallowing in wealth, I turn to my holdall and pull out my loungewear that I prefer to wear in the house.

Despite how tempting the bed is right now, I could really murder a cup of coffee, so I head out to explore and search for the hub of the house, otherwise known as the kitchen.

The house does not disappoint me either, because as I head through the hallway, every step reveals even more luxury. Lighting illuminates my steps as if by magic and it must be the result of pressure pads or something because it goes out as I pass. I am so impressed with that because at least Robert doesn’t waste electricity. I’m pretty certain he must have every gadget ever invented, and that impresses me more than the luxury I’ve enjoyed.

I edge down the grand staircase and remember the directions to the kitchen, even though I am tempted to explore what lies behind the doors that I pass.

However, the kitchen does not disappoint and as I head inside, the lights illuminate a space Mary Berry would never leave.
