A loud tap on the window makes us jump apart and my heart sinks when I see a police officer peering into the car with a flashlight.

“Step outside the car, please, sir.”

He jerks his thumb and Robert groans. “This is just great.”

“Don’t upset him, Robert. He’s only doing his job.”

I jump out too and the officer says sternly, “Stay in the car please, ma’am.”

“I’m sorry, officer, it’s just, well, um, may I have a word?”

He glares at Robert and nods to the car behind him and I watch his crew-mate heading our way to deal with Robert while I have my word.

I nod to the rear of the car and as we move out of sight, I whisper, “I’m sorry, officer, but you need to hear this before you progress.”

“I’m listening.” He rolls his eyes and I say slowly, “Now, in my purse is my warrant card and if you would like to take a look, you will see that I’m genuine.”

“You’re a copper?”

He raises his eyes as if he doubts every word and I nod, pasting on the fiercest, most stern expression that I own. “Detective Constable Jessica Taylor, currently working undercover under Detective Inspective Ranauld of Scotland Yard.” He blinks in disbelief and nods to my purse and as I present him with the evidence, he lowers his voice.

“Are you undercover now?”

“Yes.” I whisper more softly.

“I was about to learn some interesting information and then you interrupted.” I wave my hand. “It’s ok, I understand you were just doing your job but, well, the timing was a little inconvenient and I’m not sure if I’ll get the moment back if I’m honest.”

“Is it drugs?” The officer looks excited, and I shake my head. “Way more damaging than drugs. I’m sorry, I have my orders and I’m afraid this is top secret. Need to know basis, secret oaths. You know the drill.”

“Of course, ma’am. I understand.”

He glances around the car at Robert and his colleague, and it appears that Robert is blowing into a breathalyser and he shakes his head. “I’m sorry, leave it with me.”

He smiles apologetically and holds his radio up to his ear and walks around the car.

“Dave, we’ll have to let this lucky bugger go. Something more urgent has come up.”

Dave glares at Robert and growls, “This is your lucky day, mate. Keep your dick in your trousers and take your sexual activities to the bedroom in the future. People like you are a public decency hazard.”

He shakes his head and throws me a stern gaze. “Same goes for you.”

His crew mate says quickly, “We’ve really got to go.”

As they race off, Robert stares after them in confusion.

“What the hell was that all about? Anyone would think we were dogging on the A3 or something.”

I shrug as I get into the warm interior of the car and sigh with pleasure as it melts the ice that my brief encounter with the night air provided.

“Beats me. Anyway, we have a Christmas to plan, so let’s go and Robert…”

“Yes, honey.” Resisting the urge to sigh like a besotted teenager at his choice of endearment, I say sternly, “Keep to the speed limit unless you want to replace Anton in his cell.”

“Yes ma’am.” He winks and as we head off with a roar and two large smiles on our faces, it strikes me that for the first time in my adult life, I am really looking forward to Christmas.
