I glance around and note the plush leather interior of a car that definitely wasn’t bought from second hand Jim’s car lot and realise my cab driver is one of them, making me snort derisively.

“So, what do you do for a living?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Someone’s touchy.”

“Someone’s wondering how he ended up with an obnoxious fairy in his car.”

“Then stop and I’ll leave you to your soulless life.”

“You’re judgmental too. Don’t you ever give it a rest?”

“No.”

As I lean back, I savour the luxurious surroundings and his voice wafts out of the dim light towards me.

“So, you work at Harvey’s. How long have you been there?”

“Today is my first day and let me tell you this, that place is hell on earth.”

“You didn’t enjoy it then.”

“Do I look as if I enjoyed it?” I feel extremely disgruntled and snap. “Pretending to be a fairy to a pretend Santa is not my idea of pleasure, if you must know.”

“What is then?”

“Excuse me.”

“Your idea of pleasure. I mean, what would you rather be doing?”

As I remember what I live and breathe for, I say with a sigh, “I would rather be pulling out my fingernails one by one before plucking every hair from my body with tweezers. Whoever invented retail is a sadist and don’t even get me started on Christmas.”

“Not a fan?”

“Waste of time for anyone over the age of ten.”

“Then we agree on something.”

“You’re not a fan either?”

“Of the holiday, no. It merely disrupts life and costs me money.”

“It appears you have a lot of that if this car is anything to go by.”

“I do.”

“Lucky you.” I yawn loudly.

“You can drop me here. I’ll grab the tube. It’s only a few stops away and you are now officially off the hook, knowing you have done a good deed for the day.”

“It’s fine. I’ll drop you to your door. I would worry about you on the tube at this time of night.”

“Then you would know where I lived. No thank you. For all I know, you could stalk me and ruin my life. I’ll take my chance surrounded by the masses, clinging to a pole on the underground.”

The amusement in his voice makes me smile as he says in a softer voice.

“Then allow me to do as I promised and drop you to a cab company. Pole dancing on the tube could be considered an offence.”
