“He called the supplier, and they sent him one of their samples. It’s not what you know…”

“It’s who you know.” She finishes for me and lowering her voice says with a giggle, “It was so much fun last night at the Musgroves.”

“The people who had you arrested.”

I roll my eyes and she nods, glancing around to check that nobody is listening. “They are so free spirited, you know, and I’m ashamed to say…”

I close my eyes and wish I could close my ears too, because I definitely don’t want to hear this.

“We all went skinny dipping in their hot tub and drank margaritas. I haven’t had so much fun in ages, and they told us we could come and stay anytime we like. They are out of the country for six months every year and told us it would put their mind to rest knowing someone was in the house. Imagine that Jess, we will be living like millionaires for six months of the year, and they’re going to pay us.”

“Pay you.”

“Yes.” Her face radiates excitement. “They will pay us five hundred pounds for every week we stay there.”

“But I thought they were selling the house.” I’m confused, and Sally shakes her head.

“They changed their mind. They like the fact they have some non-stuffy friends to hang with when they’re here, and to be honest, I am definitely up for that.”

She turns to chat to my dad, leaving me slightly bemused and mum comes and sits beside me as Robert takes his turn to play with Angelina.

“Robert seems nice.”

“He is.”

“Where did you meet him?”

“Work.” She raises her eyes.

“So, he’s a detective.”

“Not really. I was sent to discover his stalker.”

“His stalker!” she looks impressed.

“You know, I had a stalker once.”

“You did not.” I scoff, and she grins. “I married him.”

We burst out laughing as dad glances across and growls, “Turn the television up, all this chatting is distracting me from the storyline.”

He stuffs his hand in the quality street tub and returns his attention to the screen and mum sighs. “Such a keeper.”

She turns to me and smiles softly. “Seriously though, Jess, you need a man like Robert in your life. He will be good for you and distract your attention from working all the time. You never know, maybe we will be attending a wedding in the not-so-distant future. Your dad took out an insurance policy to help pay for it, so don’t let money put you off naming the date.”

“He did?” I’m actually impressed because my parents are the most frivolous people I know and she nods, looking proud. “Oh yes. He did the same for Sally and we never do one without the other. So, is Robert the one? He’s certainly handsome. What does he do for a living?”

“He’s the CEO of Harvey’s department store in London.”

Mum blinks. “Wow. He has a good job. You should definitely hang onto him.”

As I notice Robert laugh at something Angelina says, I experience a warm feeling growing inside me as I picture my future filled with scenes just like this one. Yes, Robert is a keeper and for a woman whose idea of love was solving crimes, I’ve come a long way in a very short time.
