“Right, sorry.” He ran his fingers through his hair, kicking small stones out of the way on the path. “Well, because of…that…I told her before we could take things any further, I felt it would be right to get your blessing.”

I froze, closing my eyes. What did he just say?Blinking several times, I shook my head as I twisted toward him with my arms crossed high on my chest. “You want my blessing to marry her?”

His eyes enlarged. “Hell no!”

I glowered.

“Wait, no.” He exhaled a large breath.

“You know, for someone as tough as Emilio Rovati, you sure are scared as fuck of me.”

He shook his head. “I just respect you. You’re about to be my family and I don’t have much left. I value Isabelle which means I value you and your family.” He took another deep breath. “Let me start over, please.”

“Please.” Nestling my hands in my pockets, I stood still, waiting for him to gather his thoughts and words.

“I don’t know what my future holds with Laura, but I do like her. She’s amazing and I want to spend as much time with her as I can. But I wanted to only do it with your blessing.” He dug out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and offered me one before he lit his own.

“You go running with cigarettes?”

“I wasn’t actually planning on running. I just said that. And I think we can both use one right now.” He handed me the lighter and took a large drag of his own. “Anyway, I know Isabelle approves and I knew you seemed to start approving but I want something a bit deeper with her.”

My gaze found the rows and rows of grape trees in the vineyard. I rolled my tongue over my bottom lip before lifting the cigarette back to my mouth. Nothing in me liked Noah at first. I did not trust him, but I did now. If anyone could keep my sister safe, it was him. It was a bit weird as I thought they were not serious.

“Ok.”

“I know you’re upset but—”

“I mean ok, you have my blessing.”

He dropped his head, averting his gaze to the ground. “That’s the problem.”

“What’s the problem?”

He lifted his gaze to mine. “She’s upset with me because I said I wanted your blessing, and we shouldn’t see each other again before then.”

I shook my head, inhaling the cigarette. “Go call her and tell her I said it’s fine.”

“Now or after weactuallygo running?”

I almost laughed, but before I could, my phone vibrated in my pocket.Ah, you’re awake.

I am. Where are you? There’s no way I’ll be able to find anything in this house. Her adorable voice cracked through the phone.

Noah and I are out walking. I’ll be right up.

Okay, sounds good.

After I hung up, I dropped my cigarette to the ground then twisted my shoe on it. Noah did the same.

“What’s the plan for today?” He kept the pace as we sauntered toward the house.

“I’m going to give her a tour of the grounds and then take her to the tourist sites.”

“Oh, wow.”

“What do you mean, oh wow?”

“You don’t strike me a touristy kind of guy.”
