I was startled. Twisting to confront the man, I wiped my tears away from my cheeks. He was one of William's friends, standing over six feet tall with a muscular build. His dark, slightly wavy hair was professionally styled. A neatly trimmed beard hugged his face. It was too dark to see much more because he wore a mask, obscuring the majority of his face. His pricey, black suit gave him an aura of power and value. After examining as much as I could of him, I relaxed my posture in defeat.

“You don't want to be here, do you?”

I shrugged, “Honestly, not really.”

“Rules are rules.”

Fidgeting with my fingers, I glowered, “Does it count if I didn't sign up for whatever that was?”

“Yeah, well,” he chuckled, averting his gaze, “virgins don’t really come to this sort of thing anyway.”

“It's not like I had a choice,” I peered off into the distance, feeling betrayed by Tanya for the first time in our friendship.

“I'm sure you'll figure it out,” he commented in a familiar tone, but my mind was already playing tricks on me, so I shrugged it off.

“I just think things like this are gross,” I whispered, not wanting to insult anyone who might be listening. “Why do people come to these things?”

Taking a small step toward me, he casually ran his fingers through his hair as he muttered, “I guess some guys just don't trust women and like their privacy.” He slowly slid his hands into his pockets, concluding, “So this is the safest option.”

“Safest?” I snorted. “Sleeping with a strange woman who's been God knows where, makes no sense and is certainly not safe.”

He took an additional stride toward me, leaning close to my ear. “Then I guess whoever ended up with you will be a very lucky man.”

A chill inched over my entire body, my knees feeling fragile at the intense, dominating tone in his husky voice. Every syllable of his words tickled the small hairs on the back of my neck. Just as my legs were about to give way beneath me, an older man stepped outside with a clipboard, approaching me. The gentleman I was talking to, slowly spun around. Sauntering back inside without another word, he gave the other man a nod.

“Ma'am, you are needed as we will require your signature to complete the transaction,” his monotone displayed zero emotion.

Transaction. That word repeated in my head. I was a literal transaction. Sluggishly, I trudged inside, following the man as two others closely trailed behind me. We navigated our way through the mingling guests, coming to a door. There was no escaping now as the man led me down a labyrinth of hallways. To say I was now terrified, was an understatement.

I followed him into a large, faintly lit office. Peering around carefully, I examined the interior of the room which was just as daunting as the situation. Dark wood covered the floors, and bookcases lined the walls; all but one. The man rounded the large mahogany desk that sat in front of a large window.

He laid a briefcase on the desk and opened it. Thumbing through several sheets of paper, he pulled out a few, placing them on the desk with a pen laying on top. He closed the briefcase, sliding it out of the way.

Picking up the pen, I started to sign all the documents without reading them. I knew that was a mistake, but I did not care. I was eager to have this done. I signed the last document then laid the pen back down on top of the papers. The man reached out, sliding them toward him.

“Right, well that will be all I need from you,” he announced.

Slowly staring around, I realized that I did not know what happened next. “What now?”

He nodded toward the door without a smile. Pivoting, I was faced with the gentleman I spoke to outside. Still in his mask, he leaned in the doorway with his hands tucked into his pockets, unhurriedly trailing his eyes up and down my body.

“Oh my God,” I gasped, pressing my fingertips on my lips, “you bought me?”

Lifting his fingers to his chin, he smirked. “Relax, let’s go.”

He placed his hand on my lower back, causing my legs to lock up. I stood frozen. This was all too real now. A part of me wanted to shout,ha-ha the joke is over, but I knew deep inside that this was no joke. I was very aware of what I had just allowed to happen, and it was evident that I would not be able to get out of this one. At this point, I could only pray I made it out of this alive.

Planting my feet firmly on the floor, I folded my arms suspiciously, “Where are we going?”

“Just trust me,” he mumbled, gently guiding me out of the room and down the long hallway.

We came to the doorway of a slightly nicer office that boasted a more modern appearance in decor. It was brighter with lots of abstract artwork covering the walls; the complete opposite of the room I had just been in. The other two men remained outside in the hall as he gestured for me to enter before him. He closed the door. We were completely alone.

“Will you require anything for tonight?”

A bewildered expression spread across my face, “Tonight, what?”

Surely, he did not think this was going to happen right now. He walked behind the desk, tapping his fingers on the surface twice. I assumed he wanted the only thing I had in my hands right now, so I gave him the contract. Turning through several pages, he handed it back to me. I scanned over it, my eyes paying close attention to each line.
