Rolling his bottom lip between his fingers, he raked his gaze over my naked body. “You must have zoned out.”

I hung the towel back over the shower and followed him to the bedroom. A massive platter of loaded nachos, two bottles of beer, and two bottles of water were sitting in the center of the king size bed. “Wow.” I crawled up onto the soft duvet, taking a seat next to them.

“I should have warned you,” he laid sideways on the bed across from me, propping on an elbow, “the portions here are huge.”

“I see that.”

“I also thought beer and nachos sounded good.”

I giggled. “It’s like you know me well.”

He became quiet, watching me as I picked up one of the heavy chips. A diced tomato and a plop of sour cream fell off onto the pile as the cheese stretched. “Why are you staring at me?”

“It’s like I know you well.”

I thought he’d speak longer, so I had already shoved the entire bite into my mouth to minimize the mess. Chewing, I hovered my palm in front of my face to shield it. “Wut voo ve min?”

“What do I mean?”

Embarrassed, I nodded.

He smiled. “I’m not sure if I would have gone through with this if I’d not gone away for five years.” He lifted a hand. “You’re stunning and sexy, but I wouldn’t have been able to separate thewatching you become a womanpart. Things are just different. While I remember you younger, I also feel like I don’t. You completely changed while I was away.”

Quizzically, I arched a brow, eating another chip.

“I went away when you were young and came back to this,” he waved a hand in my direction, “a nacho, face-stuffing, beauty queen.”

Swallowing, I tried not to laugh. I wiped my mouth with a napkin, then picked up a beer. He held his hand out. I handed it to him, and he twisted off the cap, giving it back. Then, he opened the other for himself. Tilting it toward me, he smirked. I clanked the rim of the bottle on his.

“To never getting murdered for this.”

I snickered. “To never getting kinda grounded as an adult again.”

He placed the rim to his lips, almost spitting it out at my words. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, he shook his head. “My father tried to ground me when I was your age.”

“And did you accept your punishment and go work for someone so…sexy?”

“Not a chance.” He took another swig from the bottle. “I moved the fuck out. But they weren’t paying for my college, and I didn’t live the privileged life you have.”

Suddenly, I didn’t feel so hungry any longer. I realized I knew little about his past, if anything at all. Only a few mentions of his childhood. I slid the tray close to the edge of the bed and placed my drink on it. Facing him, I laid on my side, propping on my elbow as he was. “So, whatisyour villain origin story?”

“My what?”

“You know, all villains have a story that’s the catalyst for why they became who they are.”

He placed his fingers under my chin, gazing deep into my eyes. Leaning close, he barely touched his lips to mine, whispering, “Those nachos were $37.00. You better eat them.” Rolling my eyes, I got ready to sit up, but he grabbed my wrist, pulling me back down. “I'm just joking. I’m not going to force you to eat them.”

“Do the guys who work for you know you’re so sweet?”

Ignoring that, he reverted to the previous question. “Myvillain origin story, as you say, is probably when I started running around with your dad and some guys from school.”

“How did my dad become so innocent while you chose, um, the other path?”

He chuckled. “Your father wasnotand still isn’t the innocent man you think he is. But he’s your dad, so you know what he wants you to know.”

Wide-eyed, I sat up. “Tell me now!”

He shook his head. “That’s not my business to tell. Regardless of whatever we are, I’ll never betray his privacy, even if I am currently betraying his trust. He’ll always be my best friend…I hope.”
