He’s not here.

I sighed.I didn’t ask.

You didn’t have to LOL. I’m not a stupid girl. :* Hopefully you’ll hear from him soon.

I didn’t want to hear from him. At least I think I didn’t.I was only curious if you were working.

Why don’t you come hang out tonight?

Maybe! But I think my dad is being weird about something.

BRB

Rolling my eyes, I dropped the phone down on the cushion next to me.

RING! RING!

My father’s phone danced across his desk. No way was she calling him.

Hello, Maddie. What can I do for you?

My eyes widened. Maddie had my parents’ numbers, but to my knowledge she’d never had the balls to call either of them.

Tonight? He glimpsed at me for a moment, then stared ahead.

Sure. I guess that would be okay, but I’m not sending her alone.

That’s a great idea.

Okay, you too.

Goodbye. “Well, I’m sure you know what that’s about.” He propped his elbows on the desk’s surface.

Huffing, I nodded. “I didn’t even know she was asking you. I know I’m in trouble.”

“I told you before, I never said you were punished at night. We’ve been through this.” He winked. “However,” he raised his voice before lowering it, “you have to take Aiden or some other people with you.” He creased his forehead. “I know what place it is, and I know what goes on there. So, I’ll make a call and make sure the male employees there watch out for you. Thankfully, at night it’s a safe place, mostly. I still don’t want you going alone to that part of the city.” Now he was rambling.

Wow!It completely dumbfounded me that he knew what went on there. “Why don’t you come with me?”

“What? No, no.”

“Come on,” I playfully whined. “Why not?”

His eyes averted to the ceiling and his face became solemn. “I’d love nothing more than a dad daughter date to a jazz club, but your mother and I need to spend some time together tonight. I have a lot of work to do on a case after she goes to sleep.”

“Are you guys going to be okay?”

“I hope so.”

I stood, skipping to his desk, wrapping my arms around his shoulders. “Maybe the vacation will repair whatever it is.”

“We’ll see. Otherwise, I’ll be spending a lot of time bugging you guys while away.”

A nervous giggle erupted from my mouth as I stood. “I’ll get back to work.”

“Go.”

“What?”
