I shivered as his warm breath pricked my skin. He lowered a hand, inching it up my knit shorts, moving the elastic of my bikini to the side. His finger stroked my mound, dipping into my slit. He withdrew his fingertip, pushing it into his mouth. “I’ve missed the way you taste.”

ACCEPTANCE

After walking around the resort for thirty minutes, I finally found James. He was sitting under a palm thatched umbrella on the beach, finishing a cocktail. A waitress delivered him another as I approached. She twirled around, coming face to face with me.

“Oh!” She jumped back, almost knocking over the empty cups on her tray. “Hi!”

“Hello. I’ll have whatever he’s having.”

“Do you want six as well?”

“One. And only bring him justoneas well.”

With a broad smile, she trekked away in the sand toward the bar. I took a seat on the chair next to him, taking my pack of cigarettes out and lighting one. I then laid them on the round table, circling the thick, wooden umbrella stand. Rolling his tongue over his lips, he picked the pack up, taking one out and lighting it.

“You don’t smoke.”

“And you don’t sleep with your best friend’s daughter.” He took a long, first drag.

“Jamie, do you want to talk about Alicia?”

He drank a big gulp of his frozen drink, staring out at the ocean. “She’s been cheating on me for the past year.”

“A year?” I almost choked on my cigarette.

“One of the male yoga instructors.”

“Shit, man.” I scanned the beach, watching people as they passed by. “When did you find out?”

“About six months ago.”

“Wow, and—”

“Yeah, I stayed.” He lowered his gaze. “I’m an idiot for it, but we only stayed together for Eliza and Lucas. We’d been sleeping in separate rooms for a while, but they never noticed, and Eliza was barely home, anyway.”

“I know you’re pissed about us but—”

“I don’t want to talk about you and her.” He chugged the rest of his drink. “I know she’s an adult and we all have our shit we’re going through. I’m no angel, either.”

“You cheated too?”

“I thought about it but only after I knew we weren't going to work out. I didn’t go through with it, though. God knows I’ve had some fucked up dreams about someone I shouldn’t.”

The waitress appeared next to us, holding four drinks, even though I saidone. She bent over, placing them on the table. I reached in my pocket, taking out a $100 bill and handed it to her.

“Sir, the drinks are included here.”

“It’s a tip.”

“Ah!” She gently took it from me and placed it in her pocket. “Thank you so much, sir.” She grinned from ear to ear, sauntering away.

“Then find your dream woman.” I joked, taking the pink paper umbrella out of my beverage and laying it on the table. “We’re still young...enough. You have time to find the dream woman.”

“Ehhh, nooo. That’s quite okay.” He blew out a cloud of smoke, twisting to me. “Why my daughter?” His expression filled with inner turmoil. “Vinny, I know she’s an adult but—”

“I don’t know how it happened, but it happened. I can’t do anything about it now. I want to be with her.”
