“I’m guessing Aiden and you weren’t working out, so I thought you could meet Benício.”

Vincenzo shifted in his seat, tapping his thumb on the side of the chair’s arm as he stared ahead, covering his mouth with his other hand.

A server appeared next to us. “What can I get you from the bar?”

Happy there was a slight interruption, I grinned. “Rum punch, please.”

She nodded, matching my expression.

“I’ll have the same.”

“Great.” She sped away.

“Eliza,” my mother continued, not dare forgetting where she left off, “what do you think?”

“About?” I wanted to play dumb, hoping I could put it off as long as possible.

“Meeting Benício.” She leaned forward over the round coffee table in the center, picking up her drink, placing it to her lips. “He’s tall, dark, and handsome like you love…and Brazilian.”

“Mom.” It was all I could mutter. So weird.

“I told Juliana to send him a photo of you and give him your number.”

“Mom!” I gasped. “Why would you do that?!”

She sat back, crossing her leg over her knee. “I’m just trying to help you meet someone.”

“I don’t need your help!”

The waitress approached, handing Vincenzo and me our cocktails. We quickly thanked her before she sped away, probably because of the obvious awkwardness before her. I didn’t blame her. I would have hurried away as well if I could.

“Eliza, he lives close to your campus and—”

“I’m not going back to Boston!” I couldn't take it any longer.

“Excuse me?” She set her drink down, lifting her brows. “What do you mean?”

“I’m leaving law school.” I sighed, setting my drink on the table in front of me. “I’m going to fashion school in New York, and I’m enrolling as soon as I get home.” Before I looked at my father, I gave my brother a subtle smile.

My father was blankly staring at me. From where I was sitting, I could almost feel his disapproval of everything I was doing with my life right now. I wanted to cry. I felt like I’d failed my family, but Vincenzo was right about me being an adult and needing to make decisions that would make me happy. I couldn’t live my life for everyone around me.

“Like hell you are!” my mother shrieked. “Do you know how much money we’ve paid for an Ivy League school and you’re dropping out for clothes?”

“Alicia,” my father mumbled.

“How dare you take advantage of us!”

“Alicia, stop,” My dad’s voice raised a little more.

“You’re not quitting law school!” She jumped to her feet, pointing at my father. “You’re such a disappointment to us!”

“I’ll tell you what a fucking disappointment is!” My father barked, tightening his grip on the chair’s arms, glaring at my mother.

She scoffed, twisting toward him. “Excuse me?!”

“You cheating on me over and over again!”

My mouth fell agape as my mom marched around the accent table to Vincenzo and me. I sprung to my feet, narrowing my gaze on her. Vincenzo stood, knocking over our chairs.
