Even if she did get it, there was no telling how she would react to it.

“Good morning, Warren.”

The way she says my name, I decide right then and there, would never get old. The sultry lilt of her voice, the genuine smile pointed in my direction… yeah, I’m willing to sacrifice my soul to have that become a common occurrence.

“Good morning, Jane.”

Her eyes sparkle when she hears my use of her name. I saw her expression yesterday when she asked me to call her that instead of something more formal, she wasn’t just saying that.

I wondered how it felt to be thrust to the top of the food chain when you were as young as she was. She must have had a lot of pressure mounted on her shoulders. If only we knew each other better, I could help her with some of that… tension.

“How are you this morning?” Jane sets aside a pen and turns in her chair, giving me her full attention.

I don’t know what my luck is, whether Jane sends her assistant away at this time of day or if this is fate’s way of letting me see and talk to her every day, but I’m not complaining. I hope it continues.

“I’m well,” I reply, moving forward to her desk with the one and only envelope I have for her this morning. “How are you?”

She blinks and then smiles at me. “I’m good.”

“Good.” I smile back at her and set the envelope on the desk, when I glance down, I pause with my breath stuck in my throat.

There, sitting beside her keyboard, is the envelope I painstakingly wrote her name on, yet, did not deliver yesterday. I blink and move my attention to hers, her gaze is down, opening the one piece of mail I did bring, and I quickly try to decide what to do.

She has no clue that I was the one that wrote that note. There was no way for her to know that. I deliberately didn’t sign it with my name because—do I need to explain again? I’m a chickenshit.

Jane looks back up at me and must notice where my gaze keeps returning and picks up the card. “Oh, hey, I was going to ask you, did you see anyone place this on the mail cart? I got it yesterday, but it’s not signed, and I’d like to know who sent it.” A slight flush rises to her cheeks. Did it embarrass her? Did she think it was creepy? Or was this a “I’d like to know who sent it so I can kiss the hell out of him” kind of blush?

“Uh, no.”Coward. “I didn’t see anyone. Was it something bad?”

Jane bites her lip and my eyes follow the movement instantly. “No.” That blush deepens. “Nothing bad, actually…”

I raise my eyebrow, invested in her thoughts and hoping she’ll share them with me. “What is it?”

She looks back up at me and says, “Actually, it was a note from… an admirer. I think, anyway.”

“An admirer?” I ask, my voice tight.

“Yes.” She shakes her head, unable to hide her smile. “Well, unless it was for another Jane.”

“Are there other Janes on this floor?”

“No, I checked.” She giggles. Full-on embarrassed giggles and covers her face with her hands. “Sorry. I’m being silly.”

“It’s not silly,” I reply kindly. I mean it too, knowing that my words had such an effect on her has me wanting to sing from the rooftops.

“No?” she asks, her voice holding a note of uncertainty.

“Not at all,” I reply, trying to stay neutral. “It feels good to be appreciated.”

“Yes!” She points at me and her sudden burst of excitement makes me flinch a little. I smile to cover it up. “Exactly.”

I bite my tongue so hard I’m scared I’m going to draw blood.

When our conversation dies down, I turn to leave when her voice stops me. “Warren?”

I turn back and give her my attention, her eyes entrance me and I’m helpless to do anything about it. “Keep this between us? Please? I don’t need people to know I’m…” She shrugs her shoulders and I give her a smile.

“Your secret is safe with me.”
