I was fucked. One-hundred-percent fucked. Every moment that she moved her body to the music, I knew that I was just ready to hand over every last piece of my heart to this woman if she would let me.

We made our way to the bar where I ordered two waters, I offered to get her a real drink, which she declined. If I learned anything, it was she wasn’t a big drinker. She was forced to do it often to be “socially acceptable” at events she attended, but I had a feeling she wouldn’t drink if that wasn’t the case.

“They were so amazing!” She gushed after guzzling half of her water, her hand latching on to my forearm and eyes glowing with excitement.

She was covered with sweat and her makeup was running around her eyes. I’ve never found her more beautiful than in that moment.

I wished I could draw her. Again.

“Yeah, they’re good. You want to meet them?”

Her eyes light up. “I’d love to!”

I smile and step closer to her, she lets me put one arm around her and I pull out my phone with my other hand to shoot Caleb a text. He takes a few minutes to respond but then gives me instructions to get backstage.

Jane follows me, our hands tightly interlaced, and I tell the security what I was told to get backstage. I have to admit that being able to show off like this is a perk I never thought I would enjoy.

She keeps semiquiet as we head backstage, and I ask if she’s okay. “I’m nervous.”

I frown and halt us for a moment in the hallway. “Everything’s fine. These guys are cool.”

“I’ve never met a famous band before.” She tells me like it’s a secret. It’s not, considering she’d never been to a concert, but surely, she’s met lots of famous people.

“I promise, they’re really chill.” I reach up and tuck a hair behind her ear. Leaning in, I press a kiss, lightly, to her cheekbone.

“You can’t do that now!” Jane protests in a whisper-yell.

I freeze my movements, terrified that I read the entire night wrong. Was she not into me like I thought?

“Now, I’m going to be thinking about your lips on my skin when I have to meet your friends!”

I relax instantly with a grin on my face. “Really?” I move in but she fully palms my face, making me laugh out loud. She’s good at making me laugh. I’ve never been more comfortable to be myself than I am with Jane.

“Seriously. I can’t meet them when I’m thinking about… other things. Very, very PG-13 things!” She waves a finger in my face and then grasps my arm tightly, almost impulsively squeezing muscles.

I flexed. I’m not ashamed.

“PG-13 things?” My mouth goes dry at the thought.

“Okay fine, they’re R-rated. Very R-rated. I’m not sorry either.” She sticks her chin up and gives me a small smile, a blush rising high on her cheeks.

“R-rated—”

Before I can further investigate her thoughts, Caleb’s voice stops me. “Warren!”

I turn to him, swallowing my frustration and grasping Jane’s fingers in my hand. “Hey bud,” I say as we walk toward him. My thoughts are distracted though. Jane is clearly on the same page as I am and I’m eager to get back to that conversation.

It was a struggle to focus and part of me wished that I hadn’t said we could meet my friends at all. All I wanted to do was find a private place to be with Jane. Preferably her place, since mine was crawling with men who would waste no time giving me shit in front of her.

I didn’t need any of that.

In the greenroom, I found Caleb with his wife, Gemma, leaning against him. Gemma went to school with us too, only to become kind of a badass when she became an FBI agent. Now she runs her own security firm, managing security for bands and artists that travel across the globe. She and Caleb married in college, then went their separate ways for several years before a case of Gemma’s brought them back together again. Their story could have been a book.

I also saw Sydney, their drummer, Alex their bassist, and Ryan, the almighty goofball of the group, heartthrob to women from here to Australia and lead vocals.

At least, that’s what I read in a gossip magazine that got delivered to the office once. It had their cover on it and I curiously flipped through it, only to take pictures and send them to everyone with jokes attached.
