“But he didn’t tell you who admirer guy is?”

“April, I swear…”

She bites her lip and her eyes widen comically. Her hand slightly covers her mouth. “Oh shit. I think I have a secret.”

I slump forward. “This entire conversation is just confusing me more and more!”

“I know! I’m sorry. But…”

“But… what? Spit it out, April Mae!” I barely hold in the smile at her name. Gets me every time.

“I think Warren and admirer guy are the same person!” She blurts it all out at once, then her shoulders relax, and she breathes out a long sigh. “Oh man.” Chuckling, she smacks her stomach. “That feels good to say out loud. I was holding it in.”

“Holding it in? Wait, how long have you known?”

She frowns and gestures to herself. “You just watched the whole thing.”

“You found out and kept that secret for all of one minute,” I reply, not ready to dive into what she revealed.

“I know, but it was a long-ass minute!”

I shake my head, thinking about it. “Okay, I need to talk this out.” She nods. “Warren started on my floor before the poems started arriving.”

“How long before?”

“Like… one day?” I frown and try to concentrate. It’s been months since it started, so thinking back on one afternoon is a challenge considering all I’ve done in that amount of time.

“One day? So, he started on your floor, the next day; boom, a poem?”

“Yes,” I reply with a groan.

April cocks a smug eyebrow at me. “And you didn’t put that together?”

“I…” Well, when she puts it like that, I look like a dummy. But in my defense— “I asked him outright if he knew anything about the poems and he said no.”

“Oof, that’s bold.” She taps her finger on the counter.

“Are you sure about this, April?” I pause. “Wait, how do you know Warren?” In all of the new information coming out, I hadn’t even stopped to question it.

“We went to school together. College,” she clarifies and I frown. “Chris, him, I; we still have some other friends from that time frame too. Chris is over at his place right now.”

“So, you’re telling me that all those game nights you have—”

“Warren is always at them, yes.”

She finishes my thought and I frown again. You’re going to get frown lines; I swat away my mother’s voice.

“I can’t believe it. All this time.” I pick up my mug, taking a long swallow and sigh.

“I know, it’s impressive, really, that he’s been able to date you and woo you as a secret admirer for so long. The man has some determination.”

I pick at a nail. “Do you think that’s what it is?” An insecurity pulls at me. “Or do you think…”

“What?”

“Do you think he’s just playing around? You know, made it a game?”

Her eyes widen like that thought never occurred to her. “Warren would never do that. He’s not the type. When he’s interested in a woman, he goes after it with the goal of being with her. And from what I’ve heard from Chris—Dammit. I bet you Chris knew the entire time!”
