But if she noticed, she doesn’t comment, her eyes trained on the computer in front of her, she types on the keyboard and I stand there, watching her type, my breath stuck in my chest at the sight of this woman.

I thought I knew beautiful but…

“Everything okay?” She peers up at me and gives me a concerned look.

“Uh, yeah, fine. I’m good.” I stumble over the words and slap the stack of mail down on the desk harder than I intend and take a step back, careful not to fall or trip again.

“Okay.” She chuckles at me and the noise has my breath picking up speed. “Have a good one.”

I wave my hand at her, like a fucking idiot, and slam her door on the way. When I get back to the cart, I lean against it heavily and shake my head.

I’m a fucking idiot.

Chapter Four

“No one else is dealing with your demons, meaning maybe defeating them could be the beginning of your meaning, friend.”

-Twenty One Pilots

Jane

I blink at the slammed door and frown. Was there something I did that made that mail guy act weird? My phone rings on my desk and I shake my head of the confusion and refocus.

My morning moves swiftly enough that before I know it, I’m due for lunch with my mother.

“Your car is here, Ms. Leads.”

I give Lisa a look. She’s been my assistant since I started in the CEO position. She’s older than me, in her forties, but you could never tell with her shining black hair and constantly glowing bronze skin. But… she refuses to call me Jane.

“You know that I hate when you call me that, Lisa,” I chastise and slip my coat on. It’s white, matching my suit today and one of my favorites, even if it’s not practical whatsoever. “Plus, why is there a car?” I look out at the sun shining through the windows. “I thought I’d walk today.”

“Your mother sent the car. Paul is driving.”

I sigh and smile. “You know how I feel about Paul.”

She raises her eyebrow and gives me the first smile of her day. “Yes, so does Paul.”

I give a wave and head toward the elevator, tightening the belt on my coat. Paul, a.k.a. Paulie, as I lovingly call him, is the best person I know. He’s around sixty-five and the nicest father-figure type guy in the universe.

Given how much older my own mother was, I also had a hope that someone like Paul would be found appealing to her, giving me the dad I’d always wanted.

The downside of being a tube baby was never being able to find out who my father was, but how weird would that be?

“Hi, I’m Jane. About thirty years ago you decided to sell your sperm. Ta-da!”

Yeah… no.

I think Paul suspected my wishes, and if my mother wasn’t so off-putting, I would try to push it. So would he, I think. But meddling in my mother’s love life was a surefire way to get on her bad side, and likely lead to me having a killer headache.

“Ms. Leads.” I smile as I exit the building and head straight for the man standing in front of the town car, smiling broadly at me.

I shake my head at him. “What is with everyone today, is it tease Jane day?”

“You know we all love you,” Paulie replies, opening the door and letting me slide in before closing it.

I pull out my phone and check emails, texts, and missed phone calls. I don’t remember the last time I had a clear phone screen. Always, always, always notifications.

I smile at a text from April.
