“Angel?”
“Lunch, Tanner.” Wrapping her arm around my waist, she rested her head on my shoulder while we took in the spectacular feast laid out in front of us.
“In a castle?” I questioned, still not believing this was all for me.
“Where else? And you get to sit in the King’s chair, birthday boy.”
“I told you I—”
Turning to face me, Emmy ran her fingers through my hair, pushing it back from my face. “I know what you told me, Tan, but I’m not listening. Today is your day. Fuck your mum. Fuck her. You deserve so much more. I want to help you create fresh memories and a new story. It is my job,” she offered with a wink.
She led me to the top chair, motioning for me to sit, but I refused to sit there without her, so I tugged her onto my lap and kissed her, feeling her body melting into mine as our kiss deepened.
She pulled away breathlessly.
“There’s a chair there for me, Tan.”
“Like hell there is. If I have to sit here, you sit with me. Now, let’s eat. It looks delicious.”
Lunch involved her curling up on my lap while we fed each other, laughing and whispering in the echoing space of the giant hall.
“This is the best birthday I’ve ever had, Em. Thank you. All this effort. How you came up with all of this in a few hours in the middle of the night, I’ll never know. But, really, it’s been the best day.”
“You deserve magic, Tanner. You deserve all the good things.”
Someone coughed, and I looked up to see Matt standing there. “Sorry to interrupt, but we need to leave. Kevin needs to get back for another job and you have other plans as well.”
“More?” I looked at Emmy accusingly.
“More, birthday boy. And no complaining about any of it.”
“After today, I won’t complain about my birthday again. Promise.”
“I’ll remember you said that later when you’re complaining. Come on, rock star, let’s get back.”

“Youguyslooklikeyou had fun. Where did you go?” Frankie asked as she looked up from her spot on the sofa where she was transfixed by some trashy TV show.
“We went on an adventure. Saw a waterfall, explored a castle, and ate lunch like a king and queen,” Tanner answered before I could say a word, making me smile. “I’m officially a fan of birthdays again. Now I’m going to take my girl for a lie-down, if you know what I mean?”
“Eugh, I know what you mean, you weirdo. Just be quiet. I’m trying to watch people living on a boat who argue all the time. It’s so good.”
“I can’t promise anything, sis,” he shouted over his shoulder as we walked to his room.
Seconds after closing the suite door, his lips crashed down onto mine, the heat from his body burning into me. I had plans for the rest of the day, but right now all I wanted to do was let him strip me naked and bury himself inside me until I screamed his name, but I needed to stay strong.
“Tan, we can’t. We need to wait.”
“Wait? Why? It’s my birthday, remember? You can’t leave me with blue balls on my birthday.”
“I have no intention of leaving your balls blue, but we have places to be. First things, first.”
I walked to the bathroom and turned on the taps in the huge free-standing bath that dominated the room. I poured in the same oil I used to rub his feet the other night and waited until the hot water filled it. Stripping off my winter layers, I stepped into the water, feeling the sting of the heat as it replaced the cold that had cloaked my body today.
“Tanner?”
Moments later, he appeared, leaning against the door frame as he took me in. My whole body on show for him, under the oily water.
