Tears pooled in my eyes as I rubbed my belly. “Moving, really? How did I not know?”

“Some people don’t show for ages and then pop. I guess you popped. You’ve had a lot on your plate, Ivy, but I think the sickness, the lack of you taking the pill consistently, your two virile husbands, and the now very obvious bump means that you’re having a baby.”

“But Amos drugged me. He put something in my food. I starved myself for a week. I was locked in a trunk,” I cried out, suddenly terrified I’d done something to hurt the tiny person growing inside me.

“Well, let’s get you checked out before your boys get here, so they don’t need to worry about anything.”

I nodded as Melissa pulled out her phone. “T, I need you to keep Gray and Ethan where they are for an hour while the doctor checks out Ivy. I think she’s pregnant, but they’ve been through enough, so I don’t want them to know until we can give them good news. Operation distraction, Ironman. I’ll text you when we’re done.”

“Your tox screen is clear, Ivy, which means whatever he gave you has left your body, and Dr. Blakeley was right, you’re pregnant. Congratulations, but I’m going to want to keep a close eye on you over the next few months because I don’t know what he gave you."

I grabbed Melissa’s hand while I took a second to let the news settle. We were having a baby.

“I’m pregnant,” I whispered to Mel and she laughed, nodding her head, with anI told you solook on her face.

“I want to do a scan so I can work out how far along you are and check if baby’s alright. Would you like to wait for your husbands?”

“No. Can you do the scan now? I need to know if everything’s okay. I don’t want them to worry.”

“Of course. Lay back and let’s take a look.”

I closed my eyes while the doctor covered my tummy with the cold gel before starting the scan.

“Ivy,” Melissa whispered. “Open your eyes. It’s time to meet your baby.”

My eyes flew open and there on the screen was a tiny person. Inside me.

“Is everything okay?” I asked, terrified to hear the answer.

The doctor nodded. “Would you like to know the sex, Ivy?”

“Yes.”

“She’sfine. I would say you’re about twenty-one weeks and everything looks like it should. I’m going to get someone from Obstetrics to come and check everything, but from here, it looks like you have a happy, healthy baby girl.”

“How did I not know?”

“It happens way more often than you realize. Now, I am worried about your hip. The tests we did earlier show that you have a hairline fracture in your pelvis and you’re carrying a baby that’s only going to get heavier, so I need you on complete bed rest. Otherwise, you’re going to damage your pelvis even more.

“I’ll stay in bed for the next four months if I have to. Just help me have a healthy baby and two healthy husbands.”

“I will do my best.”

Chapter 39

Grayson

Myeyesflutteredopenand there was a face leaning over me.

“Are you an angel?” I croaked out.

“No, sweetie, I’m a nurse. You’re in hospital. You’ve had an operation. You’re going to feel groggy for a while, but you’re okay. I’m going to take care of you.”

Flashes of what happened blazed through my mind like the fire I remembered surrounding the house. “Ivy? Ethan?” I cried out as I tried to sit up, my heart racing with fear.

“Are both fine, I promise and as soon as the doctor gives you the all clear, I’ll take you to them.”

“Thank you,” I mumbled as I fell back asleep.
