“My brother has been locked in a dungeon for sixteen years,” he said. “He’s not... If he has...”

“What are you saying? You think that your brother is a virgin as well?”

“It is entirely possible. And if not, then what manner of sexual contact has he had? Prostitutes? If they sent someone down to service him...”

“You don’t really think that happened.”

“I don’t know. But I was counting on you having enough sexual experience that you would be able to... Ease the way between the two of you.”

“Well, I don’t. So if you’re going to give lessons, Cairo, perhaps those are the lessons you should be giving.”

The volley that was set out between them was... It was explosive. Dangerous. And she knew then and there that she had not been imagining the banked fire in his eyes. She knew that last night when she had wept with him holding on to her shoulders, she had not imagined the magnetic force between the two of them.

He wanted her. He wanted her. And that was the way of it.

He wanted her, and it was not imaginary. And she wanted him.

And she was supposed to marry his brother. She didn’t want to.

And he wouldn’t waver.

And then there was the fact that he was... He didn’t seem to possess human feeling. Neither of them did, she was certain of that. For if Cairo spoke of Riyaz as being broken, then she could rest assured that he would be even more difficult.

And she’d wanted Cairo from the beginning.

His was the kiss she’d wanted all those years ago.

The one she hadn’t been brave enough to claim.

“Do not say things like that.”

“Why not?”

And yet again, she felt the wildness. The wildness pushing at her spirit. It was an accident but today she had dressed like Katherine Hepburn. Like she had a safari to go on. A lion to tame. She had known that she would need strength today.

And she had dressed accordingly. But she remembered the power she had felt, standing naked before the windows. With the wilderness in front of her. And she was suddenly seized by another urge.

You are insane. You’ve been kissed once. You don’t have any experience.

That was true. But she had been right to run. It had gotten him to listen. Perhaps it had even gotten her some sympathy. So she would not question her instinct.

She began to unbutton her shirt. Slowly, purposefully, and she let it fall from her shoulders.

Then she unclasped her bra and let it fall as well.

She didn’t dwell on the fact that he could see her. Rather she dwelled on how good it felt to have the air on her skin. The desert before her.

Cairo was the desert. She realized.

Cairo was the sand and the sky and the sun.

Cairo was Nazul. He always had been for her. And always would be. She unbuttoned her pants, unzipped them, kicked her shoes off as she pushed the pants and underwear down her legs.

And she was naked before him, as she had been before the desert.

But she understood now. That they were one in the same. Understood now, that this was why it felt right. That this was why it mattered.

And then she stood, completely naked and unashamed. “If you wish to teach me something of value. Teach me about pleasure.”
