In a louder voice, I added, “You, on the other hand, I think I know well enough.” Standing up, I tossed my napkin down on the table. “I’m just going to show myself out.”

Taking a few steps, I noticed all the mouths hanging wide open and laughed. When I reached the door, I turned dramatically. “Just so you all know, Luca said family dinner, not a formal event. So,I apologize for my inappropriate attire. Although it gave you all something to talk about, so maybe I should say you’re welcome.”

With a swish of my hips, I turned and sashayed from the room. All eyes followed me as I left. For the people staring at my ass, I gave them a little more bounce to gawk at.

Loud shouting erupted in the dining room, and then heavy footsteps sounded in the hallway. Two massive arms circled me, and the comfort and calm that came from a Luca hug warmed me. “I’m so sorry, baby.” His lips grazed the top of my hair.

I shook my head. “Just take me home. I need one of your grilled cheeses and maybe some time on the dining room table.”

Luca turned me in his arms. “Whatever you want.” His smile was soft as he kissed me.

Walking out the front door, Mrs. Moretti called out to us. “I’m so sorry.” She hurried, obviously distressed. Wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the cold, she stopped next to Luca. “My husband can be a prick. Please don’t hold that against the rest of us.”

Her watery eyes softened my anger. “It’s okay, Mrs. Moretti—”

“Rosa.”

“Okay, Rosa, but we’re just going to go home. We can try this another time.”

One eyebrow quirked up, her whole face lightening with humor. “Home? Are you two living together?”

What?

“Not yet,mom.”

Not yet?

“Oh.” Her smilefaded. Why did she look so disappointed? “Well, get her home safe, Luca.”

The valet brought the car around, and we drove home in silence.

Not yet.

Luca unlocked the door, and I put my shoes in the little holder he loved so much.

Not yet.

Peeling off my outer layers, I moved on autopilot as Luca watched me with worried eyes.

Not yet.

When I was seated at the kitchen counter, he finally approached me. “Sasha, what’s wrong?”

Luca leaned down to get a better look at me, his big brown eyes doing little to snap me out of my stupor. “Not yet.”

His thick eyebrows pulled together. “Not yet, what?”

“We don’t live together.”

A small smile tugged at his lips. “Right. And?”

“You said ‘not yet.’ Meaning there will be a yet.”

His fingers caressed my cheek. “Hopefully. I can’t think of anything better than having you here always.”

I nodded. The idea of waking up every morning toLuca’sface, of coming home to his delicious cooking, of bumming around on Sundays, of maybe getting a dog, was intoxicating.

“But we don’t have to do anything that you aren’t ready for. I’ll wait. I’ll always wait.”
