A sputtered laugh rippled out of me as I shook my head in disbelief. I should have known his response to dry humping with Turik in front of him would be the equivalent of a shoulder shrug.

He smiled down at me before picking up a blanket and wrapping it around us. Too content to move, I melted against his chest and closed my eyes. The orgasm had been well needed and earned, and I still felt pleasant little aftershocks zinging through me.

My pulse gradually returned to normal enough that I opened my eyes and looked at my pile of clothes. I knew I should get dressed, but it was just so comfortable in Vorx’s arms. And the view…

Built higher on the shoreline, the cabin's main floor boasted floor-to-ceiling windows on either side of the massive fireplace. From where I lay, I had a perfect view of the other side of the lake. The beauty of the dark, barren branches, the crisp blue sky, and the thin strip of white coating the opposite shore spoke of calm vacation days gone by.

I exhaled peacefully then jerked in Vorx’s hold when my gaze caught on movement.

“There’s something on the opposite shore,” I said.

He turned his head and followed my gaze.

“It looks like an infected. Get dressed.”

Turik emerged from the bathroom and grabbed his pants as Vorx helped me up.

“Do you see more than one?” he asked Vorx as I rushed to redress.

“No, but the trees are thick behind him.”

Turik grunted.

“What does one mean?” I asked. “What do we do?”

“It means we are done fishing and will return to Tolerance.”

I was up in his arms the moment I had my jacket zipped and out the door seconds later. Vorx motioned to the rest of the fey, and they immediately gathered everything.

We left the lake at a run, and Turik pressed a kiss to my temple.

“You are safe, my Shelby. You will see.”

Weirdly, I felt safe. Maybe it was the afterglow of the orgasm I’d just had, but I wasn’t afraid. The logical part of my brain knew I should be, though. An infected sighting was never a good thing. But safely in Turik’s arms, it didn’t seem like a bad thing either.

What little warmth I’d managed during our time at the cabin quickly dissipated due to the speed we traveled. I did my best to press against Turik and steal what I could from him, knowing that it would be dangerous to stop.

Yet, that was exactly what we did, but not due to me.

Several miles from home, one of the forerunners spotted a few infected hiding behind trees. The way the infected peeked around the trunks, using them as shields, was freaky as hell. But the small group wasn’t anything the forerunners couldn’t handle.

However, before we could move on, distant gunshots rang out.

“Ryan said we should note the location of any humans we found,” Turik said, looking at me. “Will you worry about the humans if we leave now?”

It was no mystery that humans fired those shots. The infected hadn’t evolved to that level—something I prayed would never happen—and the fey didn’t use guns. If the humans were shooting, that meant they were in trouble.

“I will worry. But I’ll also worry if any of you go. Bullets can kill you.”

A few of the fey chuckled.

“We are very fast, Shelby, and know how to not be seen,” Vorx said.

I gave the group a hesitant look.

“No one gets hurt.”

A few of our group grunted and left. I shivered as I stared after them.
