Shrugging, he sets his box aside and walks across the room to where I stand. “Read it anyway. I like my praise in the form of ass pats andgood boys. And don’t forget,” he bumps my good shoulder with his, “you and Delicious are getting dinner with us tonight. We’re having hotdogs on a stick.”

“Oh good,” I laugh. “Nutritiousandfun.”

Fully opening Fletch’s note, I attempt to read it, only to have to flip it around when I realize it’s upside down.

“I promise not to kill you off and marry Delicious,” I read out loud, only to frown when I get to, “even if I think her ass is fantastic.” Barking out a cathartic laugh, I shove him away and toss his sort-of-accurate note to Holly’s case box. “You’re an asshole. And you’re never marrying her. I have dibs.”

“Come on.” Chuckling, he grabs his own file box and turns toward the door. “I just want you to know that if you ever go away, for whatever reason, I’ll take good care of her.”

When he winks, a growl rolls along my throat.

“Ya know, seeing as how your family is calling for a reunion and all that.”

“Stop it, Fletch.”

“I’m just saying!” Taunting, he moves into the pit. “If, at some point, you need to go home and take care of business, I’ll be here… with Delicious.”

“I will kill you. With my bare hands and a fucking crowbar, I’ll end your life.”

“That’s no way to talk to the man who would take care of your wife in her time of need,” he giggles.Giggles. “You want me on side, bruh. Not angry at you for the dent in my head.”

“You won’t have to worry about your mood.” I drop my box onto his desk and turn to him with a sneer. “You won’t be alive to care. Now you stay here.” I push away from the files and step in the direction of the escalators in the center of the building. “I’m takingmy wifeout to dinner for hotdogs on a stick.” I cast a pitying glance back his way. “I’ll collect Mia on the way. Then you can spend the night with your special Miss Penny.”

Giggling, he darts away from our desks and follows me out. “Delicious and Aubs both seriously think I’m fucking the nanny.”

“Any other woman, and you would be.” I step onto the escalator and head down. “Just because you’ve changed your ways this time doesn’t mean everyone’s gonna believe you straight away. You’ve gotta earn that shit.”

“Who even cares about me and my sex life?” he sniggers. “What about Aubree and Tim spending the night together? That shit’s crazy.”

“Mm. Crazy.”

I don’t voice my concerns about the fact my brother, who was so staunchly against taking the sweet doctor to bed, has now spent the night with her. Some might call it hormones and horniness, but I know better.

I know what it means.

“You wouldn’t actually try to marry Minka if I go away, right?” I step onto the tile floor of the lobby and move through the doors and onto the sidewalk outside. “If I need to go away for a bit; you’ll do the right thing?”

He scoffs. “The fact you have to ask is offensive.” Throwing his arm over my uninjured shoulder and tugging me in tight, he grins when pain in my chest forces me to groan.

“I’ve got your back for the rest of my life, Malone. And I’ve got hers too. You don’t have to worry about the homefront if you’ve got business in New York.”
