With no shower door or curtain, Devin steps over the lip and reaches around the white subway-tiled wall, turning on the shower head. “Nice try, Spitfire. You didn’t think I was going to let you shower alone, did you?”

Peeling my sweater off, I smile. “Au contraire. You played right into the palm of my hand.” My fingers go to my waist, slipping the button through and working the zipper free.

His head tilts, that wicked twinkle in his eyes, liketwo can play at this game. Devin yanks his sweater over his head, his undershirt coming with, and I drink up every tanned muscle and etching of black ink. He’s a walking work of art.

He pauses at the button of his jeans as I work mine down along with my base layer, stepping out of them as I stand. Devin’s breath catches before releasing a quivering, heavy exhale as he takes me in. “It’s a damn good thing I didn’t know what I was doing on that road trip because hell, Nova. Had I succumbed to my want and pursued you, you would’ve destroyed me. I’d never have recovered when I couldn’t keep you.”

I bridge the gap between us, replacing his hands at the waist of his pants and kneeling on the floor, helping him out of his layers. As I peer up, the edge of my mouth upturns. “I think you knew exactly what you were doing, Hotshot. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have fallen as hard as I did.”

Rising up, I loop my arms around his neck, and he relieves me of the rest of my delicate attire before getting rid of his. “So, my immature, emotionally stunted charm worked, huh?”

“Not a day in the last five years has gone by where I haven’t thought of you, so I’d say yeah. But I think we’ve both gone through things we needed to in order to get here. We came back to each other when we were meant to be.”

Devin guides us under the warm spray of the rainshower, steam filling the bathroom as he seals his lips over mine. Between heated kisses, he says, “It’s a nice sentiment, but I still wish we’d been doing this the whole time.”

His hands move to my thighs, lifting me with ease, curling my legs around his waist. And then my back is against the cool tile, his arm beneath me, holding my weight and the other cupping the back of my head, protective.

When our bodies lock into place, we grow lost in an innate rhythm. Hearts pounding, rapid breaths colliding. I’m captivated by the scrape of his teeth and the caress of his tongue, my skin igniting with desperation to fuse with every inch of him. I never knew it could be like this. That making love could make a human being reach another realm of existence.

Overwhelmed by him, by us, I come undone, and as Devin follows over the edge, he clashes our mouths, whispering words of love and awe.

When we come down, we lather each other, sudsy and sated.

“Today was a good day, Dev. As much as I hate to say it, I’m happy you dragged me out of bed.” I turn in his arms, the water sluicing across his pecs.

“You’re welcome,” he teases.

My fingers comb through his wet strands, pushing them off his forehead. “Though, you know you can’t keep spending your money on me like this. First-class tickets, remote vacations, bribing a world-class dog kennel to let us tour the facility just so your girlfriend can pet the puppies.”

“I can and I will.”

“Dev.”

His hand forms to the curve of my hip, grasping. “There are more zeroes on my paychecks than I ever expected to see, and I haven’t even signed a real contract yet.”

“Exactly. Once upon a time, you told me how unrealistic playing in the majors was. Don’t be frivolous with the money you make. What if something happens?”

“Baby, I promise I’m not frivolous with my money.” Devin’s lips brush along the edge of my jaw. “I save and invest good chunks of my paychecks. And I still drive the same basic SUV I’ve had since my junior year at Cal, but I want to give you the world, Nova.”

“I have you. I already have the world.”

Hauling me against him, his mouth adheres to mine, smiling as he kisses me. “Now look who’s breaking out the cheesy lines.”

“It couldn’t be helped.” I laugh.

“Have you thawed yet?”

“I’m still a little chilled, but I’ll just bundle up.”

His chin points to the freestanding tub behind me. “Why don’t you soak in the tub while I make dinner?”

“You trying to get laid again, Hotshot?”

The barest of smirks graces his face like he’s trying to control his diabolical plans. “A man can’t do something nice for his woman without wanting something in return?”

“Oh, I guess you won’t mind settling for nothing but snuggles tonight.”

“I never said that.” He gives my backside a pinch. “Go relax. Because you will definitely need your strength for the rest of the night.”
