Page 5 of Buried Betrayal

I caught her gaze and was taken aback by how bright and vibrant her blue eyes were. I was almost certain they were contacts. A spark of recognition flashed through her face, making me study her closer. If she lived in this town, she most likely knew who we were. Her face was as stunning as the rest of her body. Light makeup enhanced her round eyes, and her cheekbones had a blush of pink on them. I couldn’t stop myself from looking at her chest. Her tits were compressed under her tight shirt, just begging me to free them.

“Her eyes are up here.” Everly stepped forward and snapped her fingers in my face. “Don’t be an ass, West.”

Looking at my cousin, I grinned lazily. “Who’s your friend?”

“Let’s go,” the girl told Everly as she dropped her eyes to the ground and moved to grab her hoodie. “They can have the court.”

“Hold on. I didn’t even get your name, beautiful.” I stepped closer to her. “You can’t come onto our court without me knowing your name.”

I halted when she shrank away from me, distrust written all over her features. Raising my eyebrows in surprise, I stared at her. Everything about her radiated strength and attitude. Her clothes. Her body language—before she knew we were here. Especially her hair. Nothing about her appearance matched the look in her eyes or her voice. She was a timid thing. But she had my attention.

“What’s your name?” I coaxed, flashing her a smile. “I’m Weston, but everyone calls me West.”

“Not interested,” she snapped as she straightened her spine.

Challenge smothered my chest as my grin grew. She had a bite to her. Grabbing the ball from Eli’s hands, I cut her off when she tried darting around me. She threw me a cold glare, even though a shadow of nervousness flickered through her eyes.

“All I’m asking for is your name,” I told her as I heard Everly sigh from beside me.

“West, we’re leaving tomorrow. She goes to my university. She’s not from here,” Everly explained pointedly, making me aware that this girl really had no idea who I was. “She came to spend the last week of break with me. She’s my roommate for next year.”

“You play on your college basketball team?” I frowned when she completely ignored me. I wasn’t used to anyone treating me like she was. My family demanded respect. Every soul in this city knew it. But she wasn’t from here. And it was a welcome feeling.

Scooting to the side, she rushed past me, only for Eli to grab her arm and pull her back. Everly looked ready to argue as the girl yanked away from Eli and crossed her arms. There was a moment of tense silence before the hum of car engines filled the air. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw about four cars parking next to mine. Excitement shot through me as more people made their way to the court. It was going to be a fun night. Eli’s voice brought my attention back to the girl in front of us.

“My friend asked you a question,” he said, his gaze traveling from her feet, back to her face. “Are you playing tonight?”

I barely caught myself from rolling my eyes. Eli wanted to act like he wasn’t interested in her, but that was a fucking lie, or he wouldn’t have stopped her from leaving. He was as intrigued as I was.

The girl’s gaze fell on the people who were filling up the bleachers. “Playing what?”

Eli stole the ball back from me and spun it in his hands. “The tournament tonight. Teams of two. Winner gets the pot of money. Each player puts in one hundred.”

Her eyes widened. “Dollars?”

“Yes,” I answered. “But if you play, we’ll waive the fee for you.”

“Why?” Her eyes narrowed into slits.

“I’d rather you agree to a date with me when Eli and I win.”

My words made her go rigid before she let out a sarcastic laugh. A small stab of déjà vu hit me as her laugh echoed in my ears, causing me to inspect her all over again. I cocked my head to the side, trying to figure out why it sounded familiar. I glanced at Eli and was surprised to see a confused look on his face too.

“Let me be perfectly clear. I have no interest in either of you,” she stated, backing away from us. “Good luck with your little game, though.”

It was more than a little game. This was one of the most anticipated nights of the summer for everyone who went to Braidwood University. We played the tournament and then had a huge party to celebrate the end of summer. Luckily, it was the perfect night to do it. August in Michigan was usually humid and hot, but tonight, the weather was cool enough to play ball without dying of heat exhaustion.

“We might have to stay and watch,” Everly said to her friend, pointing to the parking lot. “Our car is blocked in.”

“Tell me her name,” I muttered under my breath to my cousin as I moved next to her.

Everly scoffed. “She said she’s not interested, West. She’s my friend and my new roommate. I’m not going to piss her off.”

For the second time, I stepped in front of the girl, stopping her from leaving the court. Anger flashed in her eyes as her hands curled into fists.

“You obviously think you’re hot shit,” she bit out. “I don’t care. Leave me alone.”

“If you agree to play, I’ll leave you alone,” I told her, wondering what the fuck I was saying. I didn’t want to leave her alone. But I did want to see her play ball. Just from watching her shoot, I knew she could hold her own on the court.
