River’s eyes stayed on the gun as he shrugged. “Not my mess anymore. I don’t have anything to do with what happens in Detroit.”

“We’ll find her.”

“Good luck.”

I could tell the guy’s patience was waning. He was moments away from pulling the trigger. I stepped into the alley, and even though there was no way River missed me, he didn’t even glance my way.

My grip on the gun tightened as I stared at River. After everything he’d done, I could let him die. Life at home would be easier. I wouldn’t need to worry about him betraying me again. Things could go back to normal. Well, as normal as they could be with Kat being back.

Even with all those thoughts, a small nagging strand of guilt wouldn’t stop pestering me. It grew larger as Richie raised his gun to River’s head.

“Fuck,” I muttered, making a split-second decision.

Rushing forward, I clutched the side of Richie’s head and slammed it into the brick wall. He crumpled to the ground before a sound left him.

River let out a nervous laugh. “I thought you were going to let him shoot me for a minute.”

“Richard would have my head if I came back without you,” I told him gruffly, staring at the dead bodies on the ground. “Do we need to clean this up?”

River scanned the alley and then shook his head. “No cameras. My gun isn’t registered. We’re good.”

I nodded as River stepped closer, looking down at Richie. He frowned, as if debating for a moment. He picked up his gun that was on the ground and didn’t hesitate before he shot Richie in the back of the head.

“What the fuck?” I hissed, looking around to see if anyone had witnessed it.

“Cole knows the rules,” he explained as he moved to leave the alley. “This asshole would come to Braidwood and try to kill me just to prove me wrong.”

We hurried back to the front of the bar, and I unlocked the car, not wasting a second to get out of here. Once we were driving, I asked my first question.

“What did you do to Cole?”

River sighed. “I messed up one of his business connections.”

“Must have been a pretty big connection to want you dead.”

“It was.”

He didn’t elaborate, making it clear he didn’t want to talk about it.

“Who’s the girl he was talking about?”

“No one you know.”

“So it’s not Kat?” I couldn’t help but ask. They’d left Detroit at the same time.

“Obviously not, since you know her.”

“Cut the shit, River,” I snapped, losing my patience. “I just saved your ass back there. Something I could have easily not done.”

He hesitated. “You don’t know her. It’s someone I got close to when I lived here. I helped her get out of a bad situation.”

“Wow, you helped someone instead of stabbing them in the back? I didn’t know you had it in you.”

Instead of his usual sarcasm, he turned to look at me, his eyes unreadable. “I fucked up six years ago. I said it before, and I meant it. I’m sorry. Same goes for what I did to Kat.”

“How about you tell me why the hell you did it?”

“I can’t.”
