“I can’t wait to fucking graduate,” he muttered.

Graduation. That was when our parents were supposed to step down, and we’d take on our roles as heads of the families. But I had a feeling that William and Richard weren’t ready to give up their power yet. Or ever.

“I’m just saying it would have made sense if we took the same car, seeing as we all had to come to the same place,” River mumbled as he followed us into Richard’s empty office.

“Do you enjoy acting like we want anything to do with you?” Eli shot back.

River flashed him a grin. “If you’re that annoyed, you shouldn’t have saved my ass in Detroit.”

“He did that for a reason.” I slung my arm over River’s shoulders and tightened my hold around his neck until he shoved me away. “Just because these last few months have been crazy, doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten. We’re just biding our time.”

“I think you two are so caught up with Kat you forgot about me.” River made himself comfortable in one of the black leather chairs.

“Planning our revenge on you is sweet.” Eli swept his tongue over his teeth before smirking. “But Kat’s pussy? Tastes even sweeter.”

River’s hands clenched the sides of the chair, his fingers digging into the leather. I leaned against the wall, watching River’s usual careless façade disappear at Eli’s taunting. River’s gaze darted from Eli to me.

“You haven’t touched her,” River snapped, not looking as confident as he did a moment ago.

I grinned. “Oh, he has. I walked in on them. It was fucking hot.”

“I touched her everywhere. For a while she was on top before we switched it up—”

“Stop making it sound like we fucked, Eli.” Kat stepped through the doorway, glaring daggers at my best friend. “We didn’t.”

River visibly relaxed at her words until Eli stepped in front of her when she moved toward an empty chair. She lifted her chin, giving him a silent warning to back off. One he ignored.

“Don’t make it seem like I didn’t touch you.” His tone was smug as he raised an eyebrow. “Did I not have you screaming every curse word you knew while my fingers were buried in your pussy?”

Her cheeks turned pink, but the anger in her gaze didn’t fade. River’s frown was back in place when he realized it was true. Footsteps came from the hall, and Kat finally tore her eyes from Eli, backing up until she was across the room from both of us. Tension rolled down my spine when not only Richard walked in but also William and my dad.

The three of them moved in front of Richard’s desk before saying a word. I shared a look with Eli, knowing this wasn’t about regular business—because if it was, then Kat wouldn’t be here. William’s gaze was zeroed in on her, and before I could, Eli angled himself between them. His move wasn’t missed by anyone in the room.

“After everything that’s happened between the four of you, I didn’t think this would be necessary.” Richard started the conversation, his glare focused on his son. “We’ve been silent, wondering if it would pass. But enough is enough.”

I stepped up beside Kat, not understanding what Richard was talking about. Eli and River looked just as confused, and my dad kept his eyes on the floor. Meaning he didn’t agree with whatever Richard was about to say, but he’d go along with it anyway.

William folded his arms. “This was part of the reason I sent Katalina away when you all were thirteen.”

“Not just you,” Richard interjected. “We all approved of her leaving.”

Kat’s spine went rigid as they spoke about her. My heart quickened, not sure where they were going with this.

Richard’s gaze went to the four of us, pausing longer on Eli. “The older you four got, the more we realized your…relationship was going to be a problem.”

“Relationship?” River repeated.

“It became clear early on that the three of you were too overprotective when it came to Katalina,” Richard answered.

“We were with each other all the time because we didn’t have a choice,” I said, not liking where this was going. “You all made sure we spent every weekend together. We were expected to grow up together.”

“Yes,” William agreed. “But did we ever say that included going behind our backs to make her life easier?”

The silence was thick as Kat stared at him, questions in her eyes. “What are you talking about?”

“Did you think I built that indoor basketball court out of the goodness of my heart, Katalina?” William asked mockingly. “No. These three convinced your mother to sign off on the construction and pay for it before I heard anything about it. After I had already told them no. Eleven years old, and they were already lying for you.”
