I grow impatient as she reassures us that everything will be just fine, even though the thought of having a baby is nerve-wracking. After a moment, she notices that we’re quieter than the average couple she deals with.

“Dr. Brown, our situation is a little different from what you’re used to.” I decide to lay everything on the table. It’ll make it easier if she knows that we’re not a family or a couple in love. We’re just two strangers having a baby together.

“Oh, how so?” she says, leaning forward on her desk.

“I’m Ivy’s sperm donor. We didn’t know each other before she fell pregnant with my sperm. I can’t explain the circumstances that led to that but suffice to say, a mistake happened, and now we’re expecting a child.”

Her mouth drops open, and she looks at Ivy for confirmation of what I just said.

“It’s true, but we’ve decided to parent our baby together,” Ivy says.

“That’s very uh, adult of you two. You have my admiration.” Dr. Brown recovers fast, and we go through what the next couple of weeks will entail. “I’ll have my assistant book a scan in a few weeks,” she says.

I like her. She’s professional despite the bomb we just dropped on her.

“So, does she live up to your standards?” Ivy asks half an hour later when we’re outside.

“She’ll do,” I tell her. “Hey, do you want to catch an early lunch?”

She hesitates a little. “Sure, okay.”

On a whim, I decide to take her to the building where our clinic is for lunch. They have a four-star restaurant in the lobby, and their food is exceptional.

“It’s weird to be back here,” Ivy says as we walk from the parking lot to the building.

“I imagine it is,” I tell her. Suspicion grows inside me as I ponder the situation we’ve found ourselves in. It feels like a well-choreographed play. I steal a glance at Ivy as I pull out a chair for her. She looks pretty pleased with herself, unlike someone who recently had her plans upended.

“Good morning, Dr. Anderson,” one of the servers says as he comes to our table.

“Hello, Brad,” I tell him and proceed to order a sandwich and coffee.

Ivy orders a salad and water. She looks so innocent sitting there, and she probably is, but I can’t help thinking how quickly things have fallen in place for her. Why did she embrace the clinic’s mistake so fast? A normal reaction would have been to throw a fit and grab the offer of a termination. If not, the next logical step would have been to sue us. She hasn’t done either of those. She just looks like someone whose plans have fallen neatly into place.

Worry eats at me. I feel as if I’ve been had. I think through it logically. She becomes pregnant with the Clarks’ baby, and then weeks later, she’s told that she got the wrong sperm. She refuses to have a termination, and then I show up and reveal that I’m the sperm donor.

“Are you okay?” Ivy says. “You look worried about something. I hope having lunch with me is not interfering with your plans.”

“No, everything’s fine.”

“Alec!”

I turn to my brother’s voice. “Hey,” I tell Jace and then introduce him to Ivy.

He raises an eyebrow when Ivy is not looking to indicate that he’s surprised at her looks. Pride swells in my chest as if I’m the one who is responsible for her hot looks.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ivy,” he says with a smile and then grows solemn. “I can’t express my regrets enough over the mix-up.”

Ivy nods. “We’re making the best out of a bad situation, as Alec here told the obstetrician.”

“Oh, you guys have already seen an obstetrician?”

“Yes, Ivy’s sister recommended her own obstetrician, Dr. Brown. She seems to know what she’s doing.”

“Everyone’s here.”

“Oh great,” I mutter when Dylan joins us. Jace does the introductions, and I can see the open curiosity on Dylan’s face as he greets Ivy.

Jace tells him about our visit to the obstetrician.
