“I gave you a wedding date for one reason only. I love you. It wasn’t for the clinic or anyone. That was purely my decision.”

“Really?” My voice is shaky. Joy is waiting for permission to explode in my chest. Alec nods, and tears spill from my eyes. Alec reaches out to wipe them off with the back of his hand.

“Tell me those are happy tears? I don’t want to lose you, Ivy. I want us to be a family. To raise our baby together. I know you don’t love me yet, but I know you will with time.”

“I love you, Alec,” I say and then repeat in a louder, stronger voice, “I love you.”

His entire face lights up. “Really?”

“Really.”

“What did I do to deserve you?” He closes the distance between us and cups my face.

“I should be the one asking that question.” I remember those couple of weeks from hell. “Alec, if we’re going to have a life together, we have to learn to communicate.”

“Yes. I know that now. I love you so much, Ivy. I want to do everything with you,” he says earnestly.

“I’m so happy.” I go on tiptoe and kiss him. His lips feel like heaven. I’d planned on a light touch of our lips, but one touch, and I want it all. I deepen the kiss, and Alec groans and slips his hands around my waist. I caress his massive shoulders and back, not caring that we are out on the street. Euphoria makes me feel a hundred feet tall.

He loves me. I want to scream it to the world.

We draw apart for air, and I stare into his eyes. “We’ve been such fools.”

“I’ve been the biggest one. How could I have believed Peter without speaking to you first?”

“I was just as bad. I should have spoken to you instead of making assumptions,” I say.

“None of that matters now,” Alec says. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again.”

I laugh. “Won’t you need to work?”

He chuckles. “Well, there’s that.” His features become serious. “This frightened me, Ivy. I thought I’d lost you forever. Can you imagine what I’d have missed out on? How miserable my life would have been?”

I push away the images of me living a miserable life alone. It won’t happen. Alec and I have found each other again.

“My place or yours?” Alec says, taking my hand.

“Yours,” I say without hesitation. “In fact, I just might move in with you very soon.”

Alec stops walking. “Don’t get me excited if you are joking.”

His excitement makes me happy. “I’m serious. I’m ready.”

Ivy

I love how quiet it is at this time of morning before the world fully wakes up. It’s a quarter to seven and the most important day of my life. It’s my wedding day. It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day. The sun streaks across the skies as if the whole world is celebrating with Alec and me.

I sip my tea and inhale deeply. This is the perfect day to get married. Originally, we had planned to tie the knot after the birth of our baby, but Alec vetoed that idea and insisted that he wanted me to be his wife as soon as possible. I was all for it, and he took over all the arrangements for the small intimate wedding with Daniella’s help. Most venues are booked far out, but Alec’s mom suggested that we should have the wedding at their home, and I agreed. I don’t care where we get married, as long as Alec will be my husband by the end of today.

I’m also glad that I decided to spend my last night as a single woman in my old house. Despite moving in with Alec, I’ve kept it, but this will be the last month I pay the rent.

I can hear voices from inside the house as my family stirs awake. There are my parents and Molly and her family. Last night we stayed up later than we should have, but it was an evening that we would all remember for a long time.

A familiar car slows down and comes to a stop in front of my house. I straighten my gown with long, nervous strokes. My morning has been perfect, but if the past is anything to go by, that is about to change.

Still, I smile as Alec’s mom walks up to the porch. I decided when Alec and I got back together to love her, irrespective of how she treated me. And the way I do that is by viewing her as an extension of Alec, whom I love with all of my being.
