“You were horny,” I tease.
“Fine,” he deadpans. “I was horny. You do know it’s more than that though, right?”
I nod. “Is it always going to be like that?”
“I think so,” he says. “Not that I’m sure. I’ve never indulged in a rut before.”
A distant voice distracts us both, and our heads snap toward it. Reyes lifts himself up on his muscular arms to look for it, and I can’t resist the urge to run my finger down his bicep.
“The moon isn’t out, but I’m still so fucking turned on,” I mutter. “I wish we were just back home at the den.”
He smiles, looking back down at me in wonder. “I think you might be in luck.”
He gets into a kneel and peers out into the distance, and I sit up to join him. Over the grasses, I see a familiar fence, a watchtower with a lone guard inside.
It’s the den.
“How…?” I ask.
Reyes scoffs in shock. “I guess I must have run us here last night. You told me to take you somewhere safe, and I didn’t know where else to go.”
“So we’re home,” I say in shock.
He crouches beside me, taking my face in his hands. “Is it your home now?” he asks.
I cover his hands with mine, my lips breaking into a broad smile. “It was all I could think about when I was trapped in Homestead,” I whisper. “You’remy home, Reyes Garza.”
He stands, gloriously naked in the dawn light, and extends his hand. I take it with a smile, standing to join him…
…and I immediately notice that my thighs are still slick with arousal from last night.
“Oh my God,” I groan. “I’m so embarrassed. I think I need a bath.”
“Good thing we’re at home,” he says. “You can…”
His eyes go wide and he trails off, his brow furrowing.
“What?” I ask.
“Tilda, I don’t mean this to sound weird.”
I cock an eyebrow. “Everything you people say sounds weird.”
“You’re probably right,” he chuckles. “But—I should tell you…I don’t think you’re infertile.”
I have to do a double-take at that, blinking my eyes rapidly at him. “Excuse me?”
“It’s a—”
“—wolf thing, right, I figured,” I say. “But Reyes—how could you possibly know that?”
“Scent,” he says. “I can’t quite explain it, but it’s something about how our scents mingle…and I think your heat may have done something to you.”
I bite my lip, thinking about what that means for us. I’d settled myself with the future before us—I’ve already raised my sister, and Reyes has had a lifetime of caring for his flock.
Before I can speak, though, he puts out a hand to cup my cheek.
“No expectations,” he says. “No questions, even. We’ll get in to see Suyin right away.”
