He rolls his eyes and sighs. The men wrap the chain around my chest, pinning my arms to my side.
“Am I going to expound on my evil plan?”
“That’s a stupid question,” I growl.
“Perhaps, but you know you’re wondering. You want to know why I’m doing this at the very least.”
“Not really. I’m only wondering how long you’re going to run your stupid mouth before I can finally kill you. Until then, could you please shut up?”
He does an exaggerated shudder then laughs.
“Oh feisty,” he says. “Nice. But no, still not the answer. I’ll tell you, okay? I’m not going to.”
“Does that mean you’ll shut up?”
He smiles and wheels his horse around.
“Bind them all,” he says, making a sweeping motion with his arm. “Especially that one. The one she likes so much. He’ll add a lot to the festivities.”
“Let them go,” I yell. “It’s me you want. Let the rest of these people go.”
Dozens of his men are binding the surviving MacGregors together. Their bound hands are attached by ropes to the waists of the one in front of them. It’s not only the men either, but they’re also gathering women, children, and elderly indiscriminately.
“That’s where you’re wrong, Quinn,” Nicholas says. “I want them all. I’m bored. They’ll alleviate the doldrums, for a while at least.”
Duncan’s motionless body is flung over the back of one of the horses. I’m bound tight in chains that are so heavy I can barely remain standing. The MacGregor clan is forced into a line while two men lift me up and toss me on the back of another horse. I lift my head and stare at Duncan. He’s breathing. There’s that to be thankful for at least.
“Off we go,” Nicholas calls. “Things to do, people to torture.”
I came back to save Duncan and his clan. Now I’ve made it worse. Thanks to me they’re all captured. As the horse bounds into motion, I bounce up and down. It rattles my teeth and my head. My arms are numb, and my legs are falling asleep.
The clan marches in a single file line, captives being led to their doom. And I’ve not an ounce of magic to do anything about any of it.
