Chapter One

Trisha

Everything happened too fast for me to catch up.

All I knew was that I was screaming.

And the two men I’d come to care for so deeply were now throwing their fists at each other.

Marshall’s lip was already split as Zane straddled and continued punching him. Zane’s jaw was bruising from where he must’ve collected a punch earlier.

“I leave you alone with her for a couple of days and the first thing you do is treat her like she’s one of your whores!” Zane shouted as he punched Marshall again.

“Stop!” The word had been leaving my mouth over and over. I moved closer and tried to pry Zane off of his friend, but he wouldn’t budge.

“She’s not one of my—I’d never treat her like that! You know that!” Marshall shouted back before twisting and flipping Zane off of him.

He was on his feet, fists raised, staring down at my brother.

“I don’t give a fuck about what you think I think!” Zane yelled and got to his feet as well. “I left you here to protect her!”

I stepped between them before he could charge at him again.

“Stop!”

When Zane’s eyes narrowed and focused entirely on me, my brain finally caught up. And it was telling me that it was a stupid idea to step into the middle of a fight, but I was the only one that could bring the entire thing to an end.

“I’m grown enough to make my own choices, Zane!” I shouted.

He stepped closer to me and I could feel the anger radiating off him in waves. “He is not the person that you want to spend your life with, Trisha. You’d be fucking blind if you didn’t see that.” He pointed at Marshall but kept his gaze focused on me. “What did he tell you? That you were so special to him and that he likes you? I’m sure he says that to every girl he fucks, Trisha. Don’t be so goddamn naïve.”

I refused to let his words make their mark in my heart. As much as I tried though, I failed. Anger rose in me in response to what he said.

“Oh, you’re one to talk.” I pushed at his chest, making him recede a step. “You talk like you know exactly what to say to someone you didn’t want to keep. Is that what you used on Monica?”

His brows furrowed.

“You told her that she was special and that you liked her and that Amelia meant nothing to you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Oh, don’t play dumb with me.” I turned the pain that had previously stabbed my chest into swords now aimed at my brother. “Amelia may not be everything that someone might want in a woman, but how could you cheat on her with your best friend’s ex-girlfriend? You broke your promise to me, Zane. So don’t stand there and judge me like you’re so fucking perfect.”

He shook his head and looked between me and Marshall. “Is that what he told you—”

“She showed up at your door wearing lingerie, man,” Marshall finally spoke. His voice was calmer than I expected given the situation. “We know what’s been going on between you two.”

“I’m not fucking Monica!” He wore a look of absolute disgust. “She’s been trying at me for weeks but I’m not sleeping with her because I have a girlfriend.” He looked straight into my face. “And unlike you,” he looked back at Marshall, “I wouldn’t do something like that to my best friend, whether you actually liked her or not.”

My words got stuck in my throat and I turned around to see Marshall wearing the same look of surprise as me.

“So, yeah,” Zane continued. “I can stand here and judge you because I’m not fucking doing anything wrong. I’m being good to every single person in my life. And apparently every single one of them wants to repay it by betraying me.”

He gave an exasperated sigh and then went to the door. "Get out," Zane said, talking to Marshall.

Marshall looked at me and fixed his clothes. "You're welcome to stay over at my house if you don't want to stay here."

I opened my mouth to reply, but Zane beat me to it.
