Page 65 of In Death We Part

A few days later, the guys and I lounged in the theater room. Every week we had a guys’ night where we’d drink, smoke cigars, and eat grinders or subs. We ate Italian subs and a tiramisu that Diana made us from a secret family recipe.

“This fight is getting good,” Mal said. He had put on the latest pay-per-view boxing match between two young kids who didn’t know enough to fight decently.

“Back in my day, warriors would hold matches in the camps and beat the piss out of each other until we couldn’t stand anymore.” I missed the days of gladiator fights, battling to the death, and dyeing rivers red with the blood of fallen enemies. “We didn’t dance around the ring taking pot shots at our opponents until they walked away at the end of the fight. We struck them down so their comrades carried their corpses home on their shields.”

“Thatcraziness is why you’re called The Spirit of Battle, A-Bomb.For Zeus’ sake,” Bash joked, doing an awful impression of my accent. Not everyone can pull off Mediterranean godly-chic.

Mal sat in the recliner, trying to make conversation with us all and come out of this weird shell he’d been in recently. Even though he apologized to Diana and made efforts to engage with her, she pretended he wasn’t there. Over dinner yesterday, he suggested we officially make every Tuesday a Taco Tuesday, where we’d serve a different kind of taco each week. Diana rolled her eyes in response, changing the subject to Oscar and his new affinity for Desmond’s office and suite. Apparently sheneversaw her baby boy anymore. I told Mal that if he kept trying, she may eventually talk to him, but not to hold his breath. He almost ended her life. I wasn’t sure if he could ever come back from that.

We were worried about Mal. How could he have possibly gotten possessed? Desmond and I had discussed it earlier today, and had some theories. Aside from Satan, we definitely had enemies that would love to infect our weakest link. He had only been a supernatural being for 250-something years–it would be easy for a malevolent entity to invade his mind and cause havoc. Even though Desmond was reasonably sure it wasn’t Satan, we hadn’t crossed him off the list.

Even though Mal didn’t purposely strangle Diana and was sorry for what had happened, things between us weren’t one hundred percent yet. He almost ruined the plans I made for Diana and me. He almost killed the future mother of my children. I was almost deprived of the joy of fucking her over and over again until she was round and swollen with my child or children. Maybe we could get lucky and hit a two-for-one deal.

Sorting through my own feelings would take time. I thought Bash and Desmond felt the same way. Their behavior around him seemed stiff, unsure. Tonight would go a long way in repairing some of the damage between us.

As much fun as I was having, I missed my Little Goddess. She was all alone in her room, most likely reading on the e-reader Desmond got her the other day. Bash had told him how much she missed reading, so he got it for her. Even if I wasn’t the one giving her things, I wanted her to be spoiled with love and affection from everyone. She and Bash shared a love of romance books, so he loaded it up with all kinds of dirty, smutty goodness. He had recently started reading this Irish mafia series with a harem of five men. She was only a third of the way through the first book and already raving about it. I loved when Bash would read some of the scenes aloud to me and when we tried them together later. Maybe she could join in on our reenactments.

Wait a minute, maybe Diana needs some help with her book.I’m sure some of the spicier parts got her all sorts of hot and bothered. She’d be all alone in her bed in her silky nightgown… with nothing but her own fingers to get her off. What kind of lover would I be if I left her high and dry like that? My Little Goddess deserved more than fingers. She’s a whole dick kind of girl. A double dick kind of girl.Eventually she and Desmond, who were taking this way too slow for my liking, would get together and then she’d be a triple dick girl. Diana needed all the dick. The more peens the merrier. That could be our crew slogan!

The sooner we all got together, the better. My mind was racing with the possibilities. Desmond could screw me, I could screw Bash, and Bash could fuck Diana. Or, Bash and Des could take her and she could suck me off. Or we could all have our separate turns with her and run a train.

Fuck, now I’m hard.I could pop away real quick to check on her, see if she needed my assistance. I waited for the chump in the black shorts to land a decent punch. The guysoooedandaaahedover it, because they had no clue what a real fight was. I took my chance to jump up and excuse myself to the restroom. I made it out to the end of the hallway, and sped to her door. Diana had tried to fix the ward because she needed privacy, but her warding skills were no match for my blatant disregard for social norms. I broke through the new one easily and let myself into her suite. She wasn’t in her living room, so I checked the bedroom and her walk-in closet.

I heard measured breathing come from the bathroom, so I stealthily moved toward it. The door was open, and Diana sat on the floor in a hoodie and leggings. She was deep in hard core meditation. Her eyes were closed, and she didn’t even realize I was in the doorway. Energy crackled through the room as her limbs dissolved, her entire body disappearing within seconds. My boner died as fear gripped my heart and squeezed it to a pulp. What happened?! I stood in the exact same spot she had sat in, to make sure she wasn’t invisible.

“Diana!” I yelled. “Babe, come back. This Isn’t funny!”

I used my magic to scan the house, the way that Bash had taught me to, but I was too nervous to concentrate on anything. Did she purposely do that? Was someone trying to take her from us? Could she even control what happened or was she involuntarily doing that?

Guys, come to Diana’s room, immediately. There’s a serious problem,I linked them all. I needed reinforcements.

Are you all seriously ditching guys’ night to have a gang bang?Mal half-joked.

I thought you were using the bathroom?Bash inquired in an amused voice.I wouldn’t mindcomingup there, this match has me worked up.

She isn’t up here to gang bang, you asshole! Birdie flew the coop.Within seconds, all three of them barreled through the door, searching the room and finding nothing.

“She’s missing again?” Desmond’s horns popped from his head. “What the fuck happened?”

“I came up here to see if she needed any help with her book, and she was sitting in the bathroom, meditating or something. Her arms and legs dissolved all the way until her entire body was gone. She disappeared right in front of me.”

“I don’t detect her magic on the grounds or in the immediate vicinity. She’s gone. The question is, was she taken, or did she leave on her own? How did she disappear? Our wards are next level.” Bash said as he stroked his stubbled chin. I had no clue how he could keep a straight head when it came to Diana, but thankfully he was.

“How are you so calm right now?” I asked, wiping the sweat from my forehead.

“Diana and I have a bond because I claimed her. If she was gravely injured or dead, I would feel her panic. Doesn’t mean I’m not worried, though.” He hugged me, and I felt a little better.

“I mindlinked her. I told her that Ares saw her disappear and that if she’s in trouble, she needs to contact me and let me know where she is.”

“What did she say?” Bash asked.

“She told me she is fine, and to meet her in the dining room. She’ll come back and explain everything when she’s done.” His body vibrated with anger. He pinched the bridge of his nose and tried to take deep breaths to calm himself down. The only temper worse than Bash’s was Desmond’s.

If I was honest with myself, my temper inched closer to its boiling point, too. Did Diana lie to me? Did myeverythingdeceive me? She purposely went away, knowing the danger we were all in. She was keeping something from me. I knew what betrayal felt like. My family treated me like dogshit. My friends on Mount Olympus turned their backs on me. Aphrodite made a sick game out of constantly stabbing me in the back and making a fool of me. Flashbacks of her deceit played in my mind.

“I’m going to leave Hephaestus and spend forever with you.”

“Of course the baby is yours, Ares.”
