Another yawn is dragged out of me and I push my hands into my hair, yanking at it. “I don’t think I have the energy to do anything but get the restaurant ready to open. I’ve still got so much stuff to do.”

He nods but his sharp green gaze stays fixed on me. “I think you’ll want to take this meeting. If you need some help, I’m on vacation right now.”

My eyes dart up to his, surprised. “I didn’t think you took vacations.”

“I don’t.” His cold voice brooks no questions but I can’t stop myself.

“Then why are you on vacation?”

“It was forced.”

“What happened?” I ask, sympathetic to his annoyance. I definitely don’t like being told what to do either. That’s why I wanted to run my own business well away from my damn family.

“It doesn’t matter. Suffice it to say that I’m available to help you.”

“Okay. Sure. I could use a little bit of help.”

“Good. Then you’ll meet my buddy tonight?”

“Alright. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.”

A sly smirk tilts his lips and he stands up to get another drink from the bar. Swirling it around in the glass then tossing it back, he coughs and then groans.

“Not right off the bat at least. But we’ll see how things go.”

I eye him suspiciously, not sure if I should have agreed to this meeting.

I might regret this a whole helluva lot but my curiosity is definitely stoked.

We all know what curiosity can do to you and I hope to hell I am not cursing my own gut instinct tomorrow.

CHAPTER5

Devin

I yawnand rub my eyes, smiling when the kids run out the door at the end of the day.

“See you guys tomorrow! Don’t forget your field trip money!” I holler to them as they dash away.

A chorus of good-byes makes me smile before I drop my head to the desk.

“Shit, I’m so damn tired it’s not funny.”

“Hello, sweetheart. How are you?” Micah’s deep, gravelly voice washes over me, my nerves tingling in anticipation.

Smiling, I lift my head. “Just a little tired.”

He stalks into the room and I feel that new quiver in my belly that I’ve been fighting for months. His long, lean body is the perfect foil for the charcoal gray suit that skims his body like a second skin. His white shirt is crisp and he’s pulled his burgundy silk tie loose. His dark hair is just slightly ruffled from the wicked breeze that’s been whipped up today by the storms that are expected to roll in tonight.

He sits down on the corner of my desk, his tailored dress pants pulled tight across his lap. I have to turn away, my mouth drying out, my heart racing in my chest.

I swear to god, I saw a bulge in his pants. A very large bulge. But that’s ridiculous. He’s my best friend. Why the hell would he be hard?

“Didn’t sleep well last night?” He asks me, his eyes down, swinging his leg back and forth in my peripheral vision.

I want to look so bad but I make my eyes stay exactly where they are. On his face.Nothis dick. That’s none of my business, right?

“No. I’m afraid I had more dreams last night.” My cheeks flush as I picture what happened in the dream.
