JAMESON

18 Years Old

"Stop, man!" Logan pleads, placing a hand protectively on my shoulder. That was mistake number one.

My fist that is meant for Jack turns into an elbow to Logan's nose behind me. His grip loosens on my shirt as he stumbles back, my fingers tightening around Jack's throat. I've hit him a few times, blood pouring from his lip and maybe even his brow. I'm not entirely sure.

"What the fuck, Jay?" Logan questions, drawing my attention for a brief second. I didn't say a word to anyone, just walked in, pinning Jack up against the wall.

"She came onto me!" Jack chokes out, my second of distraction allowing his voice to escape.

"So you thought it'd be a good idea to kiss my girlfriend?" I squeeze tighter, cutting off his airway, no one daring to come close to me.

"Jameson, stop!" Her voice sends an instant relay to my brain that tells me to obey. To listen. Like it's nearly a reflex.

She pushes me away from Jack, her hand placed firmly in the center of my chest. I move my eyes from Hanna to Jack. The blood streaming down his face sends a sense of victory to my pride. Whoever said violence isn't the answer never hit some prick that wanted to fuck his girl.

"Babe, please." Her begging does make me feel a little guilty, the terror in her eyes desperate, as she wraps her fingers around my forearm, pulling me toward the door of Jack's dorm.

Jack knew better. He knows how I feel about Hanna. All the guys do. Shit, everyone on campus does.

She shoves me into the passenger seat of her car. Slamming the door and sliding into the driver's seat, punching the steering wheel. Tears falling down her cheeks.

"What the fuck were you thinking, Jameson?"

I scoff, "I was thinking that I wanted to kill him for even thinking about you."

"It wasn't Jack's fault." She sighs, wiping her cheeks with the sleeves of her sweatshirt.

"I was upset. I came here looking for you. I didn't accept that we were over. So I got drunk and kissed Jack, thinking that would make me feel better."

"Did it?" I bark. My tone is a little more hateful than I hoped.

"No."

"Did you sleep with him?"

"Ew, No!" She squeals, a wicked smile covering my face, knowing how much she despises him.

"I love you. I shouldn't have lied about my family. I definitely shouldn't have told you I needed space. I don't want space, not ever."

She yanks me into her embrace, her body halfway over the center console. I breathe in her hair, a nice mix of cotton candy and vanilla. The scent I inhale every night on the pillow adjacent to mine. Her lips lower to mine, and I feel an overwhelming desire to taste her. She is greedy, claiming me with her mouth, trying to erase that anyone else's lips ever touched hers.

She jerks away a wild look in her eyes, one that makes me want to memorize this moment, a look of desire and desperation in her eyes.

"Promise me that no matter what, you'll always be here, that we'll always be us."

Her words resonate in my mind, making me feel even younger and reckless than usual, "I promise."

She stares down at me, pushing my hair back off my forehead, before pulling her shirt over her head. "Don't break your promises, Jameson."

I walk into the park, searching for Hanna and Ellie. I don't immediately spot them, so I sit on a bench near the trees and pull out my phone. Before I get the text typed out, I hear my name being called from behind.

"Jameson!" Ellie shouts, "Mama said you wanted to play with me!"

A smile tugs at my lips, "Yeah, that was the plan!"

Hanna approaches a few seconds after Ellie, giving me an exasperated wave, "I can't keep up with her."
