"Ah, come on mooooooom," Ellie drags, "What about the motorcycle? I could wear a helmet!"

"Ellison James Mason, absolutely not. We'll talk about the plane ride, but no way are you climbing onto that metal death trap. You will remain in a car seat."

Jameson laughs, "Hanna, you know you love the bike."

His teasing makes me blush, "Not for my baby, I don't."

"She's mine too, but you're right. I don't want her on it either. Guess I need to get a more feasible car."

Ellie's voice cuts the conversation, "You should get a truck like Uncle Judson!"

I laugh at her, "It makes her feel big."

"Well, I'll keep that in mind."

Ellie yawns, Jameson wrapping up their conversation, "Sleep tight, babe."

"I will, daddy. I love you."

Jameson's face turns a flushed shade of pale, and a part of my heart that hasn't beat for quite some time is kickstarted. Ellie is kindhearted and loving but hearing her say those three words to Jameson nearly takes my breath.

Jameson is a little choked up, "I love you too, Ellie bear. I'll see you soon. I have a late flight tomorrow, so I'll face time you Friday, okay?"

Ellie nods, walking away from the phone.

"Are you okay?" Jameson asks, my heart still beating wildly.

"Oh… yeah, of course."

"Do you need anything? I know we haven't set up anything financially, but I want to help. You shouldn't have to do everything on your own."

"We're alright," I assure him.

"Well, I would still feel better if I paid child support. If you don't need it, then you can put it up for Ellie."

I nod, not wanting to argue with him.

"Send me the account information over so I can transfer it, yeah?"

"Alright."

The silence becomes awkward, neither of us wanting to end the call.

"So I'll talk to you later then?" He gives me a half-smile.

"Yeah, sounds good. Be safe up there."

He smirks, cutting the call, leaving me here staring at the home screen of my phone.

At Eric.

I decide to call him in hopes that it can wash away this feeling. It rings all the way to voicemail. His voice filling the earpiece.

Hi, it's Eric. Leave a message.

I mash the red button. He's probably busy. His niece Lainey is staying with him while her parents are in Atlanta. Some kind of Church Leadership Conference. Eric's brother is a preacher, and Lainey… well, she's rebellious. So Eric definitely has his hands full with her. She's sweet in a morbid kind of way when I have to see her at school, though.

By the time I get to Ellie's room, she's zonked out. So I sit a little while staring at her. I can't help but wonder what would've happened had I just told Jameson the truth, made him listen.
