Quinn squeezed his shoulder. “I know. It’s horrific. But what you’re doing is important. It might help us catch this bastard.”

Eben nodded, his face pale, and started setting up.

“I’m going to take a look around the building,” Quinn told Ness. “See if I can figure out how he got in. If Daisy was so scared she was hiding out, it’s unlikely she let him in like we think Polly did.”

Leaving Ness to supervise the picture taking and removal of Daisy’s body, Quinn walked back down the stairs, noting that there was only one set. The house wasn’t big enough to have servants’ stairs. Given the number of doors in the hall, he’d guess only six or seven rooms were being rented out.

How was this man managing to get into places, kill someone, carve them up like a roast duck, and then get out without a single person seeing or hearing them?

The boarding house had only two entrances. The front door, and another in the back of the kitchen. After speaking with a few of the residents, he found that the doors were often left unlocked because people were coming and going at all hours.

So, it wouldn’t have been hard for the killer to get in. But how had he known where Daisy was? She’d obviously taken pains to hide her whereabouts, and Quinn’s own men hadn’t been able to find her.

He didn’t like it that both of the girls who’d been killed had been from Mercy House. Anxiety churned within him at the thought that Allison might somehow have come to this madman’s attention. How could he keep her safe if she decided to cut her association with him completely?
