Her butt dropped to the edge of the bed. “Casey?” she whispered.

His head fell forward, and he buried his face in his knees. As he raked his fingers through his hair, his muffled voice gripped the stillness of the bedroom. “It’s over.”

Lauren shifted and slid closer until her hand rested over his blanketed foot. “What happened?” she whispered, squeezing his toes as her eyes flooded with tears.

He lifted his head. His swollen eyes emitted the deep-seated pain stirring in his soul. It reverberated outward from his body, an invisible cloud of sorrow swirling toward her in a funnel of unavoidable understanding until it landed in her lap.

“When you love someone...” he choked out. “Sometimes you have to let them go.”

Well, that... that hits home.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Casey

Five Months Later

After packing up herthings for the weekend, Casey snapped her laptop closed and stood, yawning in her small cubicle.

“Heading out?”

Casey turned, one arm stuffed in her jacket as her supervisor, Brenda, poked her head around the corner.

“Oh umm, yeah. I mean, if that’s okay?” Her cheeks flushed pink.

Brenda grinned and slapped the file folders in her hands against the door frame playfully. “Of course, it’s okay! It’s got to be...” She pulled her phone from her pocket, widening her eyes as the screen lit up. “Geez! It’s almost six o’clock! What’re you still doing here anyway?”

Casey shrugged and shoved her opposite arm into her jacket with a sheepish smile.

It’s not like I have anything else to do. Anywhere else to be. Or anyone else to be with.

“Go home. Have a good weekend, girl.” Brenda flashed a brilliant white smile and stepped from the doorway as Casey nodded. “Oh, and umm, Casey?” She returned, poking her head back around the edge of the cubicle. “Really nice work this week. I forwarded your fundraising ideas over to the marketing team and they were really impressed. They loved everything about it. I bet we’ll see it in the mayor’s master campaign plan when it’s released next month!”

A smirk overtook her lips, the compliment washing over her as a weight lifted from her chest.

For the first time in my life, I’m actually good at something!
