I almost spit out my drink. “Well, aren’t you full of surprises.”

The twins held their stomachs and giggled. “Another one.”

He held in a laugh as he took more dishes over to be washed. “Nope, that’s all I got”

Tracy jumped up and followed him. “Jacob, will you play UNO with us.?” A look of panic crossed his face. She begged, “Please, Jacob?”

Jane ran to the tent, yelling, “I’ll get the glow-sticks.”

I slowly backed up, hands in front of me. “You’re on your own.”

My calves and feet were aching from the hike today. I quietly removed myself from the group, grabbed my whistle and told Cody, “I’m going down to the water to soak my feet.”

He nodded. “Take the bear spray.”

I put my water sandals on and made my way to the shore. I stepped in. The frigid water stung my lower legs but at the same time, it was soothing. Stretching my arms high above me, I bent to my left and then my right, easing the tension in my back.

Sounds of the night calmed me. I did a few yoga poses, breathing in the fresh air.

A rustling came through the brush behind me and I turned, startled, reaching for my whistle.

“It’s just me.”

I put my hand to my heart, “Christ, Jacob! You scared me.”

“At least you went for your whistle.”

I sat down on a rock. “Yeah, at least.”

He sat down on the ground next to me.

“Where’s your fan club?”

He picked up a rock and threw it in the water. “Cody appears to be a cleverer UNO player. I was dismissed.”

I pouted and pretended to commiserate. “Oh, poor Jacob. Kicked to the curb by teenage girls.” I wiped away a fake tear.

“You’re funny.” He wrapped his arms around his knees. “Are you doing OK?”

“Genuine concern?”

“Of course.”

“Yeah, I’m OK. Just a little sore from the hike today. You know, my busy social schedule doesn’t leave room for outdoor activities.”

“Why do you do that?” He frowned at me.

“Do what?”

“Demean yourself. You’re more than that, and you know it.”

His honest assessment made me nervous. I didn’t know what to say.

“Give me your leg.”

I hesitated, stunned.

He reached for my calf. “Give me your leg,” he said again, wiggling his fingers.
