“I think what’s more important is whether you want to apologize to her.”

His eyes squinted as if he hadn’t even considered that he’d been in the wrong.

He nodded, shrugged and put his arms out to his sides. “You’re right, I have behaved poorly. Gotta admit, Camille, I’m a little ashamed right now.”

I put my hands on his chest, and whispered, “I’m not trying to shame you. I have my own demons, and I’m trying to figure out how to make amends.”

He groaned in frustration. “I guess I thought I was clear that I didn’t want something long term with her. With any of them.”

“How would you have felt if that were Mia?” I peered up at him.

His eyes turned dark. “Like punching the guy’s lights out.”

“Exactly. Every girl wants to feel like they are important, like they mean something to someone.”

His breath warmed my cheek. “I’ll make it right. I promise.”

“Jacob,” I sighed.

“You’re important to me, Camille.”

“You’re important to me too, Jacob. I’m sorry if I made you feel otherwise.” I pressed my forehead to his chest and wrapped my arms around him.

He whispered, “Let me make you feel important.”

I lifted my head and nodded. His lips lowered to mine. The kiss started out softly, his lips pillowing against mine. We melted into each other, and the kiss became frenzied. “Danger Zone,” the revved-up song from “Top Gun,” ran through my head, as I grasped and reached for him. Our tongues clashed and I lifted one leg to rest on his hip. He held me firm.

We were slow to separate. Warm kisses lingered in between slow sweet ones. He pulled back from me, gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, and jerked his head toward his truck. I followed.
