CHAPTER 14

With a confidentnod, he turned back to everyone in the room. “Mom, Dad, can you go now? Mia and John, you’ll need to get that person a little earlier than planned. Emily and George, follow my parents since I don’t think you know where we’re going.”

Everyone sprung up off the couches and into action. Coats were thrown on. The stove was turned off. The fire was dampened. Mia grabbed the chocolate gateaux, and smiled at me. “We need a cake.”

“What’s happening? Jacob, what’s happening?”

Calm, loving eyes met mine. “You said you trusted me.”

I searched his eyes for a clue as to what was happening. “Can I redact?”

He chuckled, and shrugged into his coat. He pulled a thick, white satin ribbon out of his pocket. I tilted my chin down. “Is this where we get a little kinky?”

He smiled at me as he made his way back across the room. With care, he placed the ribbon over my eyes, and tied it securely behind my head. “No, but maybe later.” He kissed my neck, just below my ear. “Right now, we have somewhere to be.”

I was completely blinded.

He asked, “Did you see that?”

“See what?”

“Good.” He took my hand and placed it on his arm. “Follow me.”

I shuffled my feet as he guided me through the room. We stopped. “Wait here.”

I stood motionless, afraid to move. We hadn’t left the house so I had a general idea where I was standing.

I felt the plush fake fur of my shrug draped on my shoulders. “Put this on,” Jacob whispered seductively in my ear.

I wiggled my arms around, searching for the arm holes, and shrugged into my coat.

I felt him slowly buttoning up the front. “I don’t want you getting cold outside,” he said against my cheek.

“Is everyone gone?” I asked. Shuffle, shuffle.

“They are.”

“Good. You are so turning me on right now.”

He laughed and continued to walk me forward. A blast of cold night air slapped my uncovered cheeks.

He held my elbow, guiding me.

“Jacob, you’re making me nervous.”

“Just a few more steps. Keep your eyes covered.” I heard the door of his truck open. He placed my foot on the running board, running his hand up my calf in the process. He grabbed my hips and boosted me into the truck. I blindly felt around for the seat belt and he took it from me. “Let me.”

He kissed my neck after the buckle locked tight. “You smell like cinnamon.”

I reached out blindly, and ran my fingers through the curls on his head. “You are silly, and a little bit crazy right now.”

He kissed my lips. “So are you, beautiful woman.”

My door slammed shut, and then Jacob got into the driver’s seat. The engine roared to life.

“I’m sorry I freaked out tonight. Everyone was so happy, and you were acting like, well, normal, and it just erupted from me.”

“I’m sorry that I gave you a reason not to trust me, to think that you couldn’t talk to me. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you before.” His voice was like warm honey seeping through the darkness.
