Much to his dismay, by the time he makes it out to the sidewalk, neither of the two women are anywhere to be found. It would’ve been nice to end the evening with a little dessert, but it was apparently not in the cards for him tonight. And the chances of him seeing her again, well…

“Mr. York,” the bartender calls out and waves Jameson’s card in the air. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” he replies and walks up to the counter. He quickly scribbles his name on the receipt and drops the pen down beside it. “I…just got…a little distracted.”

A little distracted? Right! The bulge didn’t appear for no reason.

Chapter 2

Kat

“Thanks for going out with me tonight,” Kat says as soon as she fastens her seatbelt. “I really needed to get out and relieve some of the tension.”

“Tyler who?” Wesleigh, her best friend and roommate, throws her head back against the seat and laughs.

Both girls had already had their limits for the night, but when the bartender placed two Cosmopolitans down in front of them, courtesy of the gentleman sitting opposite them at the bar, neither wanted to let two perfectly blended drinks go to waste. They were taking an Uber home anyway, so what harm was one more drink, right?

Kat hated she worked most Saturday nights and Sundays but waiting tables at the popular chain restaurant just outside the mall was the only way she could make halfway decent money. Shifts during the day didn’t pay crap, so it was either sacrifice this time or go further in debt.

“You know,” Kat says as the driver pulls away from the curb. “I don’t think I’m going to miss him at all.”

“Why should you?” Wesleigh asks. “He hasn’t supported you one bit since you started modeling.”

“Although I do still love him.” Kat looks at Wesleigh and pokes out her bottom lip.

“There will be others, my dear. Just wait until you get to Vegas. You are going to have the guys eating right out of your hand.”

“That’s a little extreme, don’t you think?”

“Nope. Kat, you’re stunning and you’re such a natural when the camera is on you. When you get rich and famous, just don’t forget me.”

“Which building?” the driver interrupts as soon as he moves over into the turn lane.

“Number eight. Take a left in front of the leasing office and go all the way to the back,” Wesleigh replies. “And please hurry. I gotta pee like crazy.”

Though she doesn’t say the latter loud enough for the driver to hear, she has our apartment key already clutched in her hand, all set to jump out and run up the flight of steps.

“If you’d gone back at the bar, you wouldn’t be in this predicament now,” Kat teases as her friend bounces her legs up and down in the backseat.

“Well, if you hadn’t taken so long, we might already be home. Next time you’ll pay more attention to where you’re going.” Wesleigh puts her hand on the door handle and as soon as the car comes to complete stop, she takes off for the sidewalk.

“Next time I’ll be sure to get his name,” Kat says, a smile quickly appearing on her face as she recalls the handsome stranger. If she were into older men, he’s definitely someone she’d take interest in.

“You got everything?” the driver asks before turning off the interior light.”

“I believe so. Thanks and have a good night.” Kat closes the car door then slips off her heals before making the trek upstairs.

“I didn’t think I was going to make it,” Wesleigh calls out from the bathroom in the hallway.

“I’m glad you did,” Kat laughs and sets her purse down on the scarred, second-hand dining room table. “Hey, what’s this?”

Kat picks up the folded piece of paper sitting on the edge and opens it.

“Oh, yeah. That was on the door when I came in,” Wesleigh says as she walks down the hallway towards the kitchen. “Probably another warning about all the dog poop people keep leaving in the grass.”

“I’ve noticed that too. I don’t understand why people can’t just pick it—” Kat’s voice trails off as she quickly reads through the piece of paper again.

“What’s wrong?” Wesleigh asks, a worried expression suddenly appearing on her face.
