“What happened with Professor Byzatic?” I ask.

“Nothing you need to worry about,” Eirik says.

“Don’t you know anything about our girl, Rik?” Mael asks, slinging an arm over his shoulders. “That’s not going to help.”

“He woke up confused, and doesn’t remember your magicae’s outburst,” Eirik says, with a shrug. “He’s got a meeting with Headmaster Whisperfelt, however, and is going to arrange for you to drop his class until you’ve made more progress.”

“Oh.”

“With Necos,” Eirik adds, and I groan. “But I think we’ll have to wait until Headmaster Whisperfelt deals with that.”

“But he doesn’t remember… he didn’t see the gold?” I ask, and Eirik shakes his head.

“Are you sure?” Mael demands.

“I’m positive,” Eirik says, and that helps me relax. “But enough borrowing troubles. I came out here to offer some help.” Mael glares at him, and Eirik smirks. “What?”

“I don’t need your help,” Mael says, and the whine in his tone makes me giggle. He shoots me a betrayed look, and I duck my head before he turns onto me. “Really, Ellie baby?”

“Clearly you do, though,” Eirik says. “It’s been four weeks—”

“Four sessions! It might have been four weeks, but we’ve legit only had four fucking sessions to work on this—and one of them got ruined,” Mael snarls, and fire shoots up his arms. I take his hand in mine, letting my magicae absorb the flames.

“Holy shit.” Mael gasps, looking down at our joined hands. “You did it! Nowhowdid you do it?”

“I didn’t,” I say softly. “My magicae did.”

He raises our hands, and lets more fire loose, but this time it just sits there. He sighs, diminishing the flames.

“You’re guided a lot by instinct,” Eirik says, and I nod despite it not being a question. “I think I can help with that.”

Hope flares inside of me, but I don’t let it show. Mael seems upset about Eirik coming to offer his help, and I think accepting might make it seem like I don’t trust Mael’s teaching methods.

Mael is my fireanima nexumand I know he’ll see this as a personal failure. He already does, and it’s heartbreaking because it’s not his fault I’m not very good at this.

“How can you help?” Mael asks. “You barely have your own tie to fire.”

“I have plenty of fire,” Eirik says, lifting his index finger, and a flame appears at his finger tip. He circles his finger, the fire getting larger, before flinging his hands up in the air. A fire dragon, much larger than the one Mael created on my first day here in Mitagus, appears in the air.

“Wow,” I whisper, looking up at it in amazement. “You’re so talented.”

“Your dragon is shit,” Mael mutters, and unsurprisingly, there’s no retort from Eirik. “But, and I mean this in the most offensive way possible, you don’t have a bond to her like I do.” The smugness from Mael makes me laugh, but then Eirik gives me a sad look.

I haven’t changed my stance on the branding of my soul connections, even if both Ciar and Ryes have all but begged me to do it to them.

Eirik and Zohar haven’t mentioned it to me, but I occasionally hear it in their thoughts that they want that tie to me too.

Until we learn more about it, I refuse to endanger them. I hate that I’ve done it to Mael.

“Well your bond clearly isn’t helping,” Eirik says with a small shrug. “And neither are you. It’s imperative that Zoe learns to control her fire. Give me a chance.”

“Well, Princey here has told me to fuck off.” Mael drops down to kiss my forehead, but I cringe and duck away from him.

“Ew, don’t.”

“What’s wrong?” he asks, raising both eyebrows. Even Eirik’s surprised by my reaction.

“I’m sweaty,” I moan, and he laughs, echoed by Eirik. “You don’t want to touch me right now.”
