“Wow,” I say, faking offence. He winks, showing he was only teasing, even if I know he wasn’t. I get up off the bed to go grab some clothes from the wardrobe, but the moment I look at my vast clothing collection, my heart starts to race.

This sort of feels like I’m making my grand entrance, even though that’s not how it is. I can’t just wear my normal leggings and a hoodie, but I don’t want to overdress to look like I’m trying to impress them.

“Girls,” Etrix says, shaking his head when I look at him through the mirror. “Wear anything, princess. You don’t need to dress fancy. A lot of our people have terrible memories from this place, so I just didn’t want to remind them it exists.”

Or give them any reason to doubt your loyalties.

“I see.” And I do. His thoughts are more helpful in this instance than his spoken words.

Despite me being something they’re hoping for, I might not be very popular there. At least not until I earn their respect.

“Here.” He sounds exasperated as he barges past me and grabs a red jumper, some yellow leggings that belong to a Halloween costume I’ve not worn in years, and a crop top.

The outfit is hideously mismatched, and something evenI,with my very limited fashion sense, would never wear outside the house.

“Your mama and aunt would be ashamed of you,” I tease, swapping out the clothes he grabbed for a light blue dress. It’s long-sleeved, modest neckline, and reaches my knees. It’s perfect.

Pretty, but not overly dressy. Comfortable, but it has no holes in it. Modest, but not from a nunnery.

It’s perfect. I grab some tights and a pair of boots to go with it, and I know I’ll make a decent first impression at least via my wardrobe choices.

“Pretty,” he says, and I smile. “Get changed. I’ll handle the guys, okay?”

“Okay.”

He steps forward and presses his lips to my forehead before going to move away.

But I don’t want him running off that quickly. I grab his wrist, circling my slender fingers around it so he can’t pull away. I reach up on my tip toes before pressing my lips to his.

I see literal lights flashing in my eyes, the moment adorably cute as our magicae connects. He groans, and I let go of his hand just as he grabs me around the waist and lifts me into his arms. I loop my hands around his neck, doing the same with my legs and his waist, and deepen the kiss.

His hands roam across my butt, squeezing a little, as he somehow slowly walks us over to the bed without tripping over.

He lays me on it, hovering over me, having not broken our kiss at all.

Mumbling against his lips, I ask, “How long do we have?”

“Not long enough,” he groans before connecting our lips once more. His kisses are teasing, giving me life but then stealing away my breath as he deepens them, before fully pulling back and making me chase his lips to get the connection that I’m craving.

“Please,” I whisper, tugging him into me with my legs, pressing him closer.

“Please what?” he asks, and I don’t know if he’s amused or what, but it makes me whine.

“Just please,” I repeat, this time it sounds like a breathy moan. I’m not truly sure of what I’m asking for, but I know he knows.

He sighs, pulling back. I can see heat pooling in his amber eyes just before he shuts them. His breathing is heavy, and he flops onto his back with another dramatic sigh.

“What’s wrong?” I ask hesitantly.

Did I push too far? Did I do something wrong?Saysomething wrong?

“We don’t have the time,” he mutters, his chest heaving, but he still smirks at me. “Tonight, princess, you’re mine. I want more than a few stolen kisses after the shitty day I’ve had.”

“Deal!” I sound so eager, and desperate, and he bursts out laughing.

“You’re perfect,” he says, rolling onto his side to look up at me through his thick, dark eyelashes. “I’ll see you in the kitchen once you’re sorted, okay?”

“Okay,” I murmur. He squeezes my hand.
