He has trimmed black hair, with stubble across his jaw line. His eyes are a dark brown, and they’re full of inquisition as he looks me up and down. It’s like he’s trying to find my weak spots. He’s around my height, but much stockier. He works out, and has a strong magicae level. He’s a time witch, which is very intriguing. There aren’t many of those, but the lack of guards is what prompts me to take him seriously.

He’s proven himself powerful enough to be without a guard, at least for the evening. That’s something I need to be wary of.

“Hello,” I reply, giving him a tense smile. “Time witch. That’s rare.”

“Yes,” he replies, sounding amused. I don’t blame him, my intro line was shit. “So, are you happy for your brother? He’s found his soul connection and returned to the fold.”

“I am, yes.”

The man in front of me is about 25 years old, maybe a little older, but his age doesn’t unsettle me. I’m stronger than he is, myprimordiummore advanced, but I don’t know what tricks he has up his sleeve.

It makes me wary, and I’m not in a place where I have those around me who I trust.

Any one of my squad could be here in seconds, but this man can alter time. Who knows how long it would take them, and what he could do to me in that time.

“Eirik, that’s Necos Bellen,”Etrix informs me, somehow managing to keep track of who I’m talking toandmaintain a conversation with General Bascrily.

But my brother’s insight is helpful, as always.

“But, Mr Bellen, I’m also happy for you,” I say, smirking. “I heard congratulations are in order for you, too.”

He laughs, and it’s boisterous and eye-drawing.

“I’ve underestimated you,” he says.

Time begins to slow in my peripherals, and as I look around, I realise that it seems to only be affecting us.

“What have you done?” I ask.

“I’ve made it so that we’ve got a conversation just for us,” he replies. “Don’t worry, nobody will notice.”

I’m not sure if I believe him, but he truly doesn’t seem concerned.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“Do you really think that Theran is going to let Zoe come here without extra eyes on her?”

Mr Downey did say he’d have extra eyes.

“Why you?”

“Why not me? I’ve got a vested interest in her wellbeing,” Necos says, circling the rim of the glass in his hand with his thumb as he looks around the room.

“I feel like it’s more than that.”

“Unless you’re willing to share all of your secrets,” he says, cocking a brow. I remain silent. “That’s what I thought. Just know that I will be keeping an eye on our Primordial Princess, and I won’t allow anything to happen to her.”

I don’t know how to reply to that, and it’s frustrating me. I’ve been the leader of our group, the one who makes the decisions and keeps everyone else on track, and now… I’m one step behind.

I’m not the one who is being trusted with Zoe’s wellbeing. I’m another soldier given orders and forced to obey them.

I’m the fucking Crown Prince, and I’m not even—

A soft hand is placed on my forearm, and I look into the eyes of myanima nexum.

“Hey, bro,” Etrix says, pulling me in for a hug.“What the fuck is wrong with you? Necos walked away, and you’re standing on your own getting ready to light someone up.”

“Shit.”
