Sliding my phone in my clutch purse, I wave down a cab and climb into the first one that stops.

“Just a moment, two more are coming down now.”

The driver nods at the same time my phone dings. Pulling it out of my clutch, Vivian’s name flashes across the screen. I slide open the message.

Go on ahead dear, we are running a few minutes behind. We’ll meet you there.

She sends a follow-up text with the address to the restaurant, and I quickly rattle it off to the driver. I sigh while staring out the window. Tall buildings light up the night sky. Signs for casinos and nightclubs pass by in a blur as the cab driver takes me to our well my destination.

Vivian told me to be ready by seven. I double check our texts to make sure I didn’t misunderstand. Nope, didn’t read it wrong. I hope everything is okay with them.

Tom and Vivian are like my second parents. Well, they might as well be. Even growing up, my parents couldn’t be bothered with me, their only child. Instead, I spent my time in the Maxwell house with the boys. Connor and Trent. Connor was my best friend. God, just thinking about him makes my heart ache. I miss him so damn much it hurts.

The driver pulls into Moon Beach Cove, pulling me out of my dark thoughts. I pass the driver a tip as I climb out and adjust my dress.

The tall white building is lit up in twinkling lights. From the looks of it, there may be a resort or casino here as well.

Walking in, the hallway is lined with blue twinkling lights. It’s got a nightclub vibe. I continue on my way, my silver heels clicking with each step I take.

Once I reach the podium, the hostess smiles brightly at me. “Good evening.”

“Hi, I have reservations for Maxwell.”

The hostess, whose tan skin glows under the lights perfectly, smiles while tapping away on the tablet in front of her. She looks up a moment later. “Your table is ready if you’ll follow me.”

Once seated, I glance around, a little nervous to be here alone. Vivian and Tom said they would be right behind me. I would think they would be here by now.

To ease my nerves, I distract myself by looking over the menu. Everything sounds so good that I’m going to have trouble deciding what to order.

“Good evening, ma’am, may I start you off with something to drink?” The server’s deep voice almost startles me.

“Yes, a Malibu Bay Breeze.”

“You got it. Are you still waiting on others to join you?” He takes a glance at the other menus laid out before looking at me once again.

“Yes."

“Very well, I’ll be back shortly with your drink.”

I watch as he walks away, lost in thought. Why do I feel so anxious?

It’s because you're waiting on Trent’s parents.

Suddenly, I feel someone’s breath on my ear, and I stiffen. “Tell me you love me.”

That voice! I push my chair out so fast, that he has to catch it to keep it from falling to the ground.

Trent.

I throw my arms around his neck as he wraps his around my waist tightly. Trent’s lips find mine as he kisses me hard, letting me know just how much he has missed me.

Reluctantly, I pull back. The realization that Trent is actually here hits hard.

“You’re here! You’re really here.”

“What? Did you honestly think I’d miss our first Christmas together?”

“Well, I knew you had training, that was out of your control.”
