“No, I’m not Granny, I want them to can call me Nanny, Nanny Ness.”

“And Dad can be Grumpy.”

“I like that, but I think he’ll be Grandpa … just like his dad is Grandpa to you.” She takes my hand and squeezes. “I’m so excited, Chels, but how are you going to gift this surprise to Kallen?”

“I have the perfect plan,” I tell her with a smile. I just hope I can keep this secret for a little longer because I’m not very good with secrets.

CHAPTER10

KALLEN

“He’s such a douchehole puckwit,” I complain to JJ for the millionth time today.

“And you’re acting like said douchehole puckwit.” I eye him but he ignores me and tacks on, “Come on, man, you’re better than this, and him. Three more hours and we’re done.”

“We still need to give our talk,” I whine like a three-year-old who doesn’t want to leave the park … even though I’d be more than happy to leave right now. “How can I talk about being all buddy buddy with him when all I want to do is kick him in the nuts?”

“Fake it ‘til you make it,” JJ unhelpfully offers. “Look, you can either suck it up or face the wrath of Coach, your wife, and an indefinite suspension. I know what choice I’d make.”

“When did you become the levelheaded one?”

“About the same time I pulled my head out of my ass, manned up, and faced my feelings for Lex.”

“Pussy-whipped,” I snigger.

“Too right I am. Have you seen my sexy as sin girlfriend?”

Ignoring that question because we all know it’s an opening for a punch, I go with a much safer question. “When you going to put a ring on that?”

“I’ve been thinking about it, but when’s the right time?”

“When you know, you know,” I truthfully tell him. I don’t remember the exact moment I decided I wanted to marry Chels but as soon as the feeling hit, I had to do it. Hence why we had a short engagement, I didn’t want her coming to her senses and changing her mind.

“That’s not very helpful.”

“Well, Christmas is coming up, an engagement ring would be a pretty amazing Christmas gift.”

“Yeah, but then I puck myself over for future Christmases.”

“New Year’s?”

“Too cliche.”

“Fuck, you’re picky … how about January third?”

“Why that date?”

“I just picked a date, you can’t pick one so I did it for you.”

“I kinda want to do it this year.”

“Then December twenty-eighth?”

“But that date has no meaning.”

“Puck me, JJ, you’re so annoying. Just pick a date and slap a ring on it.”

“I need to ask her dad first, but he’s a scary dude and I’m kinda scared that he’ll say no.”
