I can’t decide if I want to tell Coco to get in the car and run, or if I should charge into the closet with my knife raised. The decision is made for me when I hear a noise in the closet. I throw open the door with my knife raised, ready to take on anyone or anything here to hurt us, only to find a gray cat in the corner using our clothes as a bed for what looks like five tiny kittens.

“Coco, you can come in,” I shout as I squat down and inspect the make-shift bed.

“Where are you?” Coco calls.

“In the closet. I found who’s stealing our things.”

“Yeah?” She sounds weary as I hear her get closer.

“You’ll never guess who our thief is,” I laugh.

“I’m guessing it’s not some big, bad dude since you’re laughing.”

Sitting down on the floor, I turn toward the door as she steps into the opening.

Reaching out, I take Coco’s hand and pull her onto my lap. “It’s just a mama trying to make her babies a bed with our clothes.”

Her body sags against mine. “Oh my god, I can’t believe I thought someone was here to kill us,” she laughs, and I join her.

I don’t blame her. I thought the same thing. It’s going to take a while before we can trust the outside world, and I’m not sure if we’ll ever be able to fully have faith that there isn’t someone out to get us. Although I hope I’m wrong. I’m drained from just thinking that someone was here for only a couple of hours.

Running her hand along the mama cat’s soft fur and not disturbing the babies, she quietly asks, “Can we bring them home?”

“It’s your house. If you want a cat or six, that’s up to you.”

“Bodhi,” she sighs and turns in my lap. Her face is soft as she straddles me. “It’s just as much your house as it is mine. I’ve lived there just short of two weeks more than you. Would it make you feel better if your name was on the deed?”

I jolt back, nearly knocking her off my lap. “No, I don’t want that.”

She smiles at me in the way that, if I were standing, would have brought me to my knees. “Are you planning to end this relationship?”

“Never,” is my one-word response. How could she even think such a thing? I’m at the beginning stages of planning how to propose and tie her to me for eternity. It’s hard to find the perfect way to show her how much she means to me and appreciate everything she’s done for me.

“Okay, I didn’t think so. With that out of the way, we’re partners. In everything. What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine.”

A lump the size of a grapefruit forms in my throat at her words. I try to swallow it down, and my words come out gravelly. “That doesn’t seem fair in the grand scheme of things since I have nothing to give you.”

Placing her hand on my chest, she rubs her thumb back and forth. “You’ve given me your heart and soul, and that’s more than anyone has ever given me. It means the world to me. I don’t need anything else.” Her lips turn up at the corners as her eyes shine. “Until we have a baby. Then my life will be complete.”

“You want kids?”

“With you, I do. I can’t wait to see you as a father.”

“And I can’t wait to see you round with my child inside of you. To watch it grow and see the two of us in one tiny person finally.”

Resting her head on my chest, she slips her arm around my back. “It sounds perfect, and in the meantime, we can have lots and lots of practice.”

I couldn’t think of a better way to spend our time here than burying myself deep inside the woman I love.

CHAPTER4

COCO

Iwatch as Bodhi uses a couple of the sheets from the closet to make a little bed for the mama cat and her babies. He’s going to be an amazing father. I knew it before, but after seeing him taking care of them, I have no doubt in my mind. My ovaries are screaming at me to jump him and make a baby with him, stat.

That’s not going to happen, of course. Well, not the baby-making part, but I am going to strip him and have my wicked way with him once he’s done.

“Are they all settled?” I lean on the closet door frame.
