She giggles at my reaction. “It was my best friend Julie’s uncle and aunt’s bar. We would go there after school to do our homework, then get sodas and snacks for free. It wasn’t like we were hanging out and drinking underage.”

“Your parents didn’t care?” I ask her.

“No, my mom was usually at some board meeting for a charity event or something she was a part of. As long as I was home for dinner by six and stayed out of trouble, they didn’t really care where I spent my afternoons after school.” Sadness clouds Abigail’s eyes for a moment but she Okay quickly shakes it off and deals another game.

I can tell there’s a lot more to the story than she’s letting on. She’s a tough nut to crack. Good thing I have all weekend to work on it.

CHAPTER3

ABIGAIL

It’s three in the morning, and I’m lying in this huge comfortable bed, but all I can do is think about sneaking across the hall to Jackson’s room. His warm breath against my neck when we were in the kitchen was almost my undoing. I was so close to turning my head and pressing my lips against his. Goddamn him, why does he have to be so tempting?

Hanging out with everyone was a blast, even when I was trying not to let it show how much Jackson was affecting me. Keeping it together around our friends is definitely going to be a chore this weekend, but I’m not ready to tell Kasey or Lindsey about what’s been going on between Jackson and me. Not that anythingisgoing on, but I never divulged to my two best friends that he and I slept together after the club or any time after that. It’s not that I want to keep secrets from my friends, but I’ve been burned in the past with a relationship not working out and my blood family taking the side of my ex. I don’t want to put Kasey and Lindsey in the position where they’d have to choose between Jackson and me, so not talking about it seems like the best idea. Maybe. I’m not sure.

God, why did I let him in my bed in the first place?

Unfortunately, that doesn’t change the fact that I’m lying here, arguing with myself not to sneak over to Jackson’s room. I told him we weren’t going to have sex again, and I meant it, but when the wine is flowing and Jackson is being his damn charming self, the reasons for not wanting to continue whatever it is we’re doing get hazy.

No, the best thing for me to do is just to go to sleep, then tomorrow, I can pretend my resolve hadn’t wavered. Problem solved.

Hopefully.

Not bothering to get dressed, I opt for the fluffy robe hanging in the bathroom for guests. I make my way downstairs in the morning after a fitful night’s sleep. My long red hair is tied up in a messy bun, and the only thing on my mind is how much caffeine I can get into my system before the rest of the house wakes. Unfortunately, a six-foot, blonde hair, blue-eyed sex god is in front of the coffee pot.Sex god?I must be exhausted.

“Morning, Red. How did you sleep?” Jackson gives me a knowing look, surely noticing the exhaustion in my eyes.

I’m not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ll be damned if I let him see how much he’s already messed with my head this weekend. “I slept great in one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever been in. How about you?” Plastering a wide smile on my face, I try to hide how irritated and tired I really am.

“Huh, that’s weird. I could’ve sworn I heard you tossing and turning all night.”

I would love nothing more than to slap the smirk off his face.

“Jackson, don’t be creepy to our guests,” Donovan says as he walks into the kitchen with Kasey under his arm.

“It’s not creepy, brother. I just wanted to make sure Abigail was comfortable in her room.”

“If you think standing outside my door and listening is being a good host, you have a lot to learn, Prince,” I scoff.

“Are you two ever going to stop bickering?” Kasey laughs out.

“No,” we reply at the same time, which makes Kasey laugh harder.

Jackson hands me a cup of coffee, and I take a sip—a little sweet and a little creamy, just how I like it. I offer him a small smile in thanks, and he nods as if it’s no big deal. Kasey looks between the two of us, and I can see the dots connecting in her mind. I need to shut that shit down quick.

“So, what should we do today?” I ask Kasey.

A wide smile stretches across her face, her previous train of thought momentarily derailed. “I thought it would be fun to take a walk around the property and enjoy the snow, maybe build a snowman. You know, like we used to do when we were kids.”

“Growing up in the south didn’t lead to many winters with enough snow to build a snowman, but I’m up for it.” I sip my coffee. Damn, it’s perfect.

Aiden makes his way into the kitchen, followed by a zombie Lindsey, who plops down on a barstool at the counter. He makes her coffee, then sets it down in front of her, and she gives him a grateful smile. Taking a sip from the cup, Lindsey breathes out a sigh of satisfaction.

“Ah, liquid gold,” she says, admiring her cup of coffee.

If I thought I had a caffeine addiction, it’s nothing compared to Lindsey’s. The girl can’t be bothered with life before her first cup. Good thing Aiden knows and always has coffee waiting for her when she wakes up in the morning. That’s a good man right there. My eyes wander to Jackson, then down to the cup of coffee in my hands.

Son of a bitch.
