“No, I did have to promise that we wouldn’t go out to thesite without him.”

“I love how protective he is with you.”

“I do too.”

“Let’s go get me some toast,” Nicole said.

Brenna grabbed her purse.

The drive down the mountain took a while because she wanted to be careful since it was her first time driving the mountain road, and they kept stopping to look at the scenery.

“This place is beautiful. I can see why you’re staying.”

“I hope you’re going to stay too.”

“It’s a small town. How many jobs will they have for us?” Nicole asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe we’ll open something—our own little shop.”

Nicole turned to her with a smile. “Do they have a bakery in town?”

“I have no idea, but it’s something we could check out. We all like to bake, so it’s a great idea.”

“The more I think about it, the more excited I get.”

Brenna nodded. She looked around for a parking spot. “I’ve never seen it this busy.”

“But you’ve only been here a few days, remember?” Nicole said.

Brenna laughed. “You’re right. It feels like I’ve been here forever, though.”

Nicole pointed. “There’s a parking spot.”

Brenna wheeled into it and parked. “Let’s go. I’m hungry.”

The women stepped onto the sidewalk.

“You’ve got to get the bacon too. I don’t know why everything here tastes so much better,” Brenna said and then looked over to Nicole and didn’t see her. She twirled around and saw her worst nightmare come to life with one arm aroundNicole’s throat and a knife up against her face.

“Stuart, stop. She can’t breathe.”

“Come here now, and I’ll let up,” he said.

She took several steps back toward him. “You don’t want to do this.”

“Like hell, I don’t. You’re going to pay for breaking my heart,” he said.

“How did I do that?”

“You knew we were supposed to be together, and you threw it away,” he said as his gaze continually scanned the area. “Get back in your car now.”

Brenna rushed to get in the driver’s seat while he and Nicole got into the back. He didn’t let up on Nicole’s neck much, but she was happy that it was enough for her to breathe.

Chapter Eleven

“What do you want me to do?” she asked.

“Drive.”
